US residents, which ISP's are more controlling than others?
US residents, which ISP's are more controlling than others?
How safe is it to torrent from a home network? I've had friends torrenting from their home and being warned for doing so. How do I know if my internet provider is monitoring my activity and can I stop them from doing it? If you reside in the US what internet providers do you recommend?
Thanks for the responses.

Re: US residents, which ISP's are more controlling than others?
Some ISP's are stricter than others, but since I'm not from the US, I have no idea which ones are relatively safe, and which aren't.
It would be interesting to split this into another topic though, and hear from our users who are in the US.

Unfortunately I don't live in the US, so I can't really give advice on the consumer choices available there, I'm really sorry.

@ingridip6 I've decided to split these few replies off into a new topic, I hope you will get some good replies.

//MOVED
Topic moved to Off-topic and stickied. I also added a poll to the opening message, with some names from US-based ISPs (found out through my Google "skills" ). If anybody knows of any other available ISPs in the US, please let us know. We'll add those to the poll as well then.
Edit: I'd also like to add (in case you are worried in this particular case), that poll votes here are entirely anonymous.

I'm not sure if you're still looking for input, but from what I've heard, comcast is pretty easy-going on warnings, and they'll give you several before actually deciding to shut off your internet. In my experience, AT&T is the only ISP I've ever gotten a strike from (i'm the one vote.. lmao). Several years ago, I downloaded a Pokemon rom hack (i'm not even sure if that was considered pirating?) and got a letter from them. I don't exactly remember if they shut off our wifi as i wasn't the one paying for it, but we've switched to comcast since then and I've downloaded many things from this site without issue

Just found this topic.
I've been with Frontier for several years and have never received any notifications/emails/etc regarding downloads. Same deal with Verizon (who sold their rural DSL and wirelines to Frontier Communications back in 2009 in several states). Still need to be careful where you acquire downloads.
