Help Installing a OS to a SSD. [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,

As some of you know I'm getting a new PC, it comes with a SSD and I want to install my operating system onto that SSD, only problem is I don't know how, I'm use to doing the basic install of an OS on a normal HDD, when other options aren't available, so I wouldn't have a clue how to install to OS to the SSD.

Can some kind soul help me out on installing my win7 OS to my SSD? Instructions/directions would be great thanks!

P.S Is the windows 7 download fixed? (with the boot files?)

Firstly, I would like to say congratulation to you for new CPU/RIG/Computer. I'm happy for you.

For your question, I think there is no major different in installing a OS to SSD. Exactly same when you installing an OS to HDD.

I believe this video/tutorial will help you:

I believe you're installing OS to a new computer, means you do not have OS installed in other HDD. In the above video, he show you how to unplug the SATA cable from old HDD. Just skip that part. Do not forget to give priority to SSD to boot first.

Hello,

The steps for an SSD are exactly the same as an HDD. I actually bought myself an SSD recently.
I have a 60GB SSD, but only 14,3GB. What you should do is change the actual "location" of your Desktop. When I put something on my Desktop, it's actually copied to one of my HDD's, instead of the SSD.

But if you have a bigger SSD, there's no need to do this of course.
An no, the "fixed" version is not released yet.

Thanks for all the advice, I just have a few questions though.
First, will I need to unplug the HDD and only have the SSD connected during installation like in the video? Or is it fine to leave it in?
Secondly, how do I choose where to install it at with both HDD and SSD attached?
Thirdly, @admin how do I change the location of my destop to be on the HDD and not the SSD? (I too only have a 60GB SSD, upgrading later)

Hello,

No need to unplug the HDD, just connect the SSD too.
During the installation, you'll be asked where you want to install the operating system. (Did you ever install an OS before?) At this step, just choose the drive with about 55-60GB shown - that's most likely your SSD. Select it and click "Next". The wizard will now install the operating system to your SSD. (This should also be a lot faster than when you install an OS on a normal HDD)
After the installation succeed, I'll let you know how to change the Desktop location, OK? It's just a little tweak in the Registry, nothing to worry about now.

I didn't want to start a new post but I'm just wondering if the windows 7 all editions is fixed (so it can be installed from boot) I'm finished getting all the PC parts etc (picking up the monitor tomorrow) , and will need the windows 7 OS in a day or two, because everything will be ready for the OS.

Otherwise I'll have to use this one

It's okay I got another one and just booted from that... I'm having a few problems however...

First, I used the SSD to install the OS, but for some reason when I look at the computer screen It only sees the SSD drive, and not my 1 TB HDD.

From what I see, it's actually recognizing your version as not genuine, and the main solution is call MS support, which isn't a option. But a chance the the steps below might work, but if it doesn't not sure what other ways around making it work might be.

1) Click Start
2) Type Slui 3 (and press enter) in the start search box
3) Enter Product Key
4) Click Next to Activate It

If you want to install another OS Ubuntu/most of Linux OS's aren't really that big, some of the OS type's running files can fit onto a cd (less then 800 MB's) but a bit more for a actually install.

Step 3, enter a product key... I don't have one? It's a cracked version lol but thanks for the suggestion Smile

Oh, you could also play with the Window 8 Release Preview, for maybe a month before Windows 8 is Officially launch.

Edit: but it would probably require you to wipe your harddrive.

Edit: Hmm, Looks like a Window 8 stuff might have a discount till almost February to compete with the cost of OS X Mountain Lion. But I can't find any price for the actually version, all I'm seeing is upgrade prices.

Window's 8 is mainly just Window's 7 with some upgrades and metro, so it should be compatible with all games, if not can run them in compatibility mode.

But yeah, if you want 7, need to wait for Admin.

Um no, What I wanted to do was have the OS installed on the SSD and have the destop and files (music, videos, program files, etc) installed/stored on the HDD (because its 1TB in size while the SSD is only 60GBs, which won't be big enough) Admin said he would tell me how to do it when I got up to it, which I will after I fix the windows 7 issue and get the HDD working. lol..

Hello,

This is not true, unfortunately. We've had many people here who had problems running The Sims 3 on windows 8 and compatibility mode did nothing to solve that.
It's likely that it'll all be patched in due time, but as of right now it's not advised to use windows 8 if you want to play games.

As for the original problem, I'm afraid I won't be of much help. I'm still running XP Laughing

Would cause the problem of a harddrive not being seen. Mildly old info, but was redirected to it when I looked at something for Win 7 and having a slave harddrive.

As for the product key, just use a "Windows 7 Activator". Try this one, I uploaded for you here: http://goo.gl/umiv4
Download it and run the program. Choose "Activate" under "Loader". after that, restart your PC and let us know the result. Good luck!

As for the HDD... be sure it's plugged in to a SATA (Assuming it's a SATA HDD) port on your motherboard correctly. If it's correctly plugged in, please open the Start menu and right-click on computer; choose "Manage". A new window will open.
In the left menu, click on "Drive management". All connected HDD's will now be shown, even the ones not showing in "Computer". Now look for your 1TB drive and right-click on it, choosing "Assign drive letter...". Give it a drive letter and voilà, it should show up in "Computer" now.

I tried the windows 7 activator and I still get this error when typing "activate windows" into the start box

Hello,

Don't worry about it not saying "Activated". As long as you don't get any pop-ups about your Windows being non-genuine, there shouldn't be an issue.
As for the HDD, choose "New Simple Volume..." to format the drive, so you can use it. During this process, you should be asked to assign a drive letter. If not, just do so afterwards.

Thanks admin, yeah it's weird, it's not actually asking for activation at all, what I think might have happened is the de activation tool that came with the install of win7 actually removed the whole activation feature itself? since I can't seem to be able to find anything to do with activation..

As for the HDD I've got it working, so thanks Very Happy

So just my last question, How can I change the place where things are stored? For example, I want all my folders (Pictures, videos, downloads, music, desktop, and Program files) linked to the HDD, So that when I add something it goes directly to my HDD and not the SSD (because as you can see this is getting full very fast lol)

My program files mainly will need to be stored somehow on the HDD because the sims alone take up a lot of room, as well as I have many other large games.

Hello,

Glad to hear it's all working fine so far!
Last time I changed the location of the "Program Files" folders, almost all my programs got messed up! So I wouldn't recommend changing the Program Files folder, but just choosing "Custom" installations for all your programs and games and changing the installation folder.

But I do recommend changing the "Desktop" to a new location. You can do so as follows:

1. Open the Registry Editor (Start/Run: regedit) and navigate to: HKCU > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > User Shell Folders
2. Double-click on the "Desktop" value to change the standard location.

Okay so can I do steps 1-2 again for music/documents/videos/pictures etc?

Also what value do I change it to? It's weirdly written so I wouldn't know how to change it from here:

Hello,

Yes, the two Program Files folders are normal! One is for 32-bit applications and the "Program Files" is for 64-bit programs. (Note: x86 = 32-bit)

As for the Registry, change that whole value to B:\, just like that. What a coincidence, I have a special B:\ partition for my Desktop too!
But 1TB just for the Desktop is a little bit(!) too much... I recommend splitting the B:\ partition into more partition(s) and give them their own drive letter(s).

Yes, you can also change the location of all the other folders, but I really recommend you leave those untouched. Do you store your photo's in "Pictures" at all?
