The Sims 3 launcher problems - notice. Empty The Sims 3 launcher problems - notice.

Hello all,

I thought I'd post a "Sticky"-topic like that to let you know about a couple of issues with the "launcher" in The Sims 3.

1) The first thing to note is that especially if you have lots of items in the .sims3pack format installed, the launcher will take quite a long time to open. In my case, with all the official store content, the launcher takes around 8 - 9 minutes to open up. If your launcher eventually opens up after that time, and you look into My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/DCCache, you will see files with the .tmp ending. These are basically copies of all your current .sims3pack CC, which EA thought could help with an issue where the CC deleted itself. The big disadvantage of this is though that the launcher now takes a long time to open up.

These .tmp files can be safely deleted (they only take up lots of filespace on your hard-drive, especially if you have lots of .sims3packs). However, if you do decide to keep these .tmp files, it won't change anything significant about the loading times: the launcher will still make "copies" of all your .sims3packs.

If I'm not mistaken, this "feature" was introduced with the patch level 1.55; so I'll assume that most of you will be affected by this issue. My suggestion is that you use CC Magic for installing most of your .sims3packs, instead of the launcher (for a good guide, check out this topic here). If you want to install neighborhoods, you still have to use the launcher though, since it's the only way to install these. But in my opinion it's much better having to use the launcher only "rarely", rather than use them for all items.

So again: for neighborhood .sims3packs use the launcher, and for all other .sims3packs, use CC Magic.

2) The next issue concerns various crashings of the launcher. For example, I have encountered an issue, where the launcher would crash if I "scrolled down" the list of installed .sims3packs in my launcher. The only real solution I can offer for this is that you avoid this scrolling down. Read: you shouldn't "mess" around with that launcher too much, except for installing neighborhoods.

Also, in Windows Vista, 7 and 8, you could right-click on the launcher logo (C:\Program files(x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin\Sims3LauncherW.exe) and choose "run as Administrator" - this might help prevent some instances of crashings too.

3) Sometimes, when opening up the launcher, you'll get a window saying something like "an error has occurred on the script of this page". If you get that, click on "Yes", and in *most* cases, that window shouldn't pop up again. If it still persists, you could try updating your Adobe Flash player and Java too (these update notifications should come up automatically on your taskbar, as soon as they're available).

As a very radical measure, if this window pops up again and again, try resetting your Internet Explorer. In Windows Vista/7/8, this can be done by going to the System Control Panel, then Network and Internet -> Internet Options -> Advanced (tab) -> Reset Internet Explorer Settings (Reset). After the reset, try the launcher again.

In the end though, these tips I presented here are nothing more than just (possible) workarounds. All these launcher issues would have to be fixed by a future patch; whether there will be another patch is questionable though. That said, I hope that these small tips can help at least some of you. As for me, I don't even use this launcher for anything besides installing neighborhoods. For starting the game, I usually use the TS3W.exe, located in C:\Program files(x86)\The Sims 3\Game\Bin

Good luck !    The Sims 3 plumbob
