City Simulators - My perspective on them, what about yours? Empty City Simulators - My perspective on them, what about yours?

Hi!

Since the release of Cities: Skylines I had some fun with it, and now that I played for a little while, I thought I would give my two cents on the city builder games I have known so far, and I would also love to know how YOU feel about those games as well, since it can be a nice source for new players around...

Cities: Skylines

The latest, the newest, everybody is talking about it and having fun with it as well. It's a nice game and it performs REALLY well (at least on a high end gaming laptop with 32 GB of RAM etc etc). It's something between Cities XL and Simcity 5 (2014).

What I like:

  1. Performance
  2. Different types of street, roads, highways, trains...
  3. It's a new game, which is something welcome
  4. You can expand the land and there are already mods around the web.
  5. Decent total Map size
  6. Dams and Water dynamics are fun! Pollution doesn't spread all over the city (which makes the game easier but a bit unrealistic)

What I don't like:

  1. Doesn't have tunnels;
  2. Feels smaller compared to Cities XL (or other newer versions that are the same)
  3. We are in 2015 and, for a new hyped game, MMO would be nice
  4. Subways won't have crossings, they already come with a piece of tunnel in it that's fixed on a certain direction, the game should allow you to put the stations and, after, put the tunnels anyway you want (something even Simcity 4 had more than a decade ago)
  5. Hard time managing public transportation, and population doesn't seem much interested in using it, even when you make it free (I believe someone will come up with a mod to fix that, though)
  6. Won't allow terraforming after you start the city (you have a separate map editor, but you can't play around much with the landscape once you started playing, maybe someone comes up with a mod)

Simcity 5

Huge failure from Maxis that just killed the franchise, it's a game that doesn't match its audience, EA is working on making their games easier and more simple, so people with low end computers can play, and also kids, as it seems, but they forgot that adults are interested in other games besides shooting or killing ones!

What I like

  1. Some On Line play
  2. New dynamics

What I dislike

  1. Small Maps
  2. Too little variety on features
  3. No terraforming
  4. Everything else, the game is just a rip off and a huge failure of something that could have been great considering the time they took to release this version!

Cities XL

At least until they come with enough new content for Cities Skylines, Cities XL is still my favorite when we talk about city simulator in strict sense, even though it could perform better.

What I like

  1. Large Maps from start
  2. Tunnels for Roads, trains and subways!
  3. Resources like schools and hospitals "spread better" on the map when you build
  4. Zoning is much more well designed, with several density levels and you can also define if a zone will be for poor or rich people/companies
  5. More realistic graphics, better landscaping with mountains, lakes, snow etc
  6. You can do terraforming!
  7. You can create more levels of roads
  8. You can place subway stations and make them with different lines crossing them.
  9. Again, TUNNELS!!!

What I don't like

  1. Performance
  2. They just released the exact same game as if it was something new, making us believe they are not intending further serious development of it, which is a shame!

MineCraft

I know it's not a City Building game, but I had to mention, since it has such a wonderful environment. It works fast, it allows multiplayer, it allows custom servers (I can run a server on my home, my office, anywhere a local or open network is available and a decent Windows computer is running, meaning it's an MMO that doesn't require the developer to charge us a monthly fee to keep their servers running), we can see things with a first or third person perspective, we have full freedom to build, lots of Mods, it allows players to talk etc.

The open world concept is just awesome, you can go in any direction and it doesn't seem to ever end! You can build, and build, and build... The views are really nice (even for a block styled game), the way you do things and control the camera is just excellent, you can also build things using command lines (if you are an operator), which is really awesome when you think about "building large".

It's a shame there's not a city or life simulator with the game play features present in MineCraft, otherwise we would have an exceptional winner!!!

So, what are your perspective? How do you feel about the simulators we have around? Does any of you know of something new under development? I think that, once the hype from Cities Skylines goes away (it's a good game that can grow to be better, hopefully), won't there still be an empty space in the market for a more "serious" game to come around?

Meanwhile, which is your favorite?

Sorry, my mistake! Facepalm

I can't move my topic there, though, since it's out of the sims scope. Glad you like it!
