I messed up installing Windows 7 on a new drive, BSOD's on startup Empty I messed up installing Windows 7 on a new drive, BSOD's on startup

So I decided today I wanted to install a SSD into my system and install a copy of windows on it (It is the OCZ Agility 3 60gb). Anyways I format the drive correctly in order to install windows onto it. I insert the disc and start installing windows onto it from original boot drive (I think that was a mistake). So I leave for 10 minutes or so and a come back to a standard BSOD with the error 0x0000007B (0x80786B58, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) so I reboot but every time it started the "Starting Windows" screen it BSODed with the same error. So I assume it must be something to do with the SSD drive, so I removed it but it still BSODed with the same error. I go on the internet looking for solutions, but non of them worked. Then I noticed it was trying to boot into a partition called Windows Setup Rollback, with that information I open up the boot manager with F8 and press Esc then I selected Windows 7, still didn't work so I used startup repair on it, but now it BSOD's on boot with error 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A97E8 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034 0x0000000000 0x0000000000). I think I royally screwed up but I don't want to wipe and then do a clean install because installing my 200+ games from steam on my **** internet connection takes weeks.

Yes, I did remove the SSD and did a startup repair after, thats when I started getting the other BSOD error. It still crashes booting into safe mode.

Hello jac4e,

I'm not sure I understood a couple of things: so you already have a hard-drive with Windows 7 installed, but now you want to basically add a new SSD and re-install Windows 7 on it (and boot from that device) ?

Did you make any other changes in your BIOS ? For example, I have an option in my BIOS that says "Configure SATA as..." and then the options RAID, IDE & AHCI. In my case, the default settings is AHCI (which is the standard setting for most private end-user computers). Can you look into your BIOS for such a setting too, or did you change anything else in the BIOS ?

Also, did you make any other hardware changes ? The fact that you still get the error after removing the SSD is also weird...can you double-check your cable connections inside the computer, if anything is wrongly connected ?

Right after I took the SSD out I did see in the bios the "Configure SATA" Setting was set to Raid which is not the default setting, so I changed it to the default: AHCI. Thats all I changed in the bios. I did insert a system repair disc and I did checked the disk using chkdsk but it said the disc was perfectly fine.

Sorry for the late reply, but did you consider the possibility of a potential hardware damage, somewhere ? Maybe your old hard-drive even has an issue. This chkdsk-check doesn't have to mean very much. Shortly before my old HDD died, I also did that, but chkdsk didn't show anything. It checks your hard-drive for "bad file sectors", but just because of that, it doesn't necessarily give you any indication of a larger (hardware-related) issue.

If you didn't change anything else in your system, then it could be an issue. But then you maybe someone else has a better idea.

Hi there,

So you do or don't have Windows installed already? If so, you might want to remove the original installation first. (Don't think it's related to the BSoD though)

Also try taking out and placing back the RAM sticks correctly.
Side-note: you don't have to re-download all your Steam games. You only have to reinstall Steam and then copy all the game files to your new Steam folder. Located in: ...\Steam\steamapps
