Planning to build my own PC? Empty Planning to build my own PC?

Post by coolcandy3001 Tue 14 Apr 2015, 23:56

I just need a few questions answering regarding building PCs and PC parts in general;

Here's my plan (so far, it's constantly changing):
CPU - AMD Athlon x4 860K 3.7 GHz Qaud-Core Processor
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper TX3 *I was told the cooler that came with the CPU is pretty bad and I was suggested this one*
Motherboard - Asus A88XM-A Micro ATX FM2+
Memory - Kingston Fury White 8GB (2 x 4GB
Video Card - Asus Geforce GTX 750 Ti
Case Fan - Corsair Air Series Purple 2 Pack

More info: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nddHD3
----
Things left out:
Tower - Already have a full sized one
Power Supply - Already have a good enough one
----

Other info:

  • I want a PC where I can render a HD video and play games without lag or without my CPU being 100% used up by it.
  • I'm on a budget of £400/€554.91/$591.16
  • According to PCPartList, at current prices (with a new sound card and Windows 8.1) it'll be $553.99!

---
So anyway.
I would like to know a few things -

  • Someone keeps mentioning getting GPU - What is GPU?

  • What's an APU, is it bad? Someone told me APUs preform worser than other processors? Is the processor I listed an APU?
  • Does the PC do what I said I want it to?

  • Are there any incompatibilities that PCPartlist doesn't alert me of (It tells me the motherboard may need a BIOs update
  • Am I missing anything? (See full list posted)

----

Thanks in advanced, I'm a noob at this haha.

Hello,

And that's why you should be careful with this, if you're doing it the first time. Smile  But first things first: and APU is a processing unit that somewhat "combines" a traditional CPU (processor) and a GPU (what most people call "graphics card"). About the performance of such an APU, keep in mind that some of these consist only of an "integrated graphics chip" alongside a regular CPU, and that is not good for gaming purposes.

If the computer has an extra graphics card, like the GTX you mentioned, then it's OK. You can then "switch" to that card, when playing games. But an integrated graphics chip alone is not good.

Concerning the configuration itself I can't say too much about it; maybe someone else is more versed with that specific configuration. But from the way it looks, it is good. One thing though: do you know what the power supply is about ? How many Watts can the power supply "bear" ? If your power supply is weak, then your computer might shut itself off during heavy playing (and judging from these parts, my guess is that your power supply should have at least 600-700 Watts or so, but I'd have to google all the separate parts, on how many Watts they need).

Moreover, if your computer needs a load of Watt, it will also mean that your power bill will rise. So you might want to clarifiy that with your parents (or your legal guardian) in advance - so that there is no misunderstanding about this.

Maybe I will post back, if I find out I forgot something, but for now this is it.

My dad built my current PC, and it's apparently a 1000W power supply, my mum said it was too. So I know I'm okay in taht aspect.
Um, so having 1 graphics card isn't good?? I don't understand I'm hopeless <3

What I meant to say was that if your computer ONLY has one so-called "integrated graphics chip", then it's bad. But if your computer has a "real" graphics card, like the GTX you mentioned in the opening post, then it's good.

Oftentimes, you can find these inegrated graphics chips in (cheap) laptops. Most people do not consider this fact, when buying a laptop. They only see the price and that's usually it. And then they wonder why they can't run most modern games on these laptops.

These chips tend to be uncommon in desktop computers though, but still, make sure you inform yourself about those parts. Again, if your computer has such a GTX 750 Ti, then it's absolutely fine. Smile
