Minecraft Video Calls and Browsing (for real?!) Empty Minecraft Video Calls and Browsing (for real?!)

I could not let this video pass me by without sharing with you (it's not mine).

Do you think we can have that installed in our server somehow, @Admin? It seems pretty cool!

Minecraft Video Calls and Browsing (for real?!) Empty Re: Minecraft Video Calls and Browsing (for real?!)

That's very impressive to say the least. Unfortunately, it's usefulness is reduced to only Minecraft plugin developers and programmers. They didn't release the complete project, 'only' a open sourced Boxel-Client and Boxel Server that allows anyone to implement the 20fps video and web browsing on their own plugin. Calling, voice support and the rest aren't included in the code released. And it still requires a lot of work to make it functional, as far as developing your own Bukkit plugin. Even more so thanks to the amount of dependencies the Boxel Server requires to run, something that would slow down the server a lot.

Sorry to disappoint, but it's not realistic to expect running this in the server. It's very cool in a programming perspective, but not in a practical one, as it's not functional. The web pages are so blocky that you can't read anything, and running video could very well crash the server.

Wow, that looks very cool indeed! (Where did they find the time to do all of that???)
Too bad that it won't work on our server though. SeoY has a point, it's probably going to blow the server up.

Though, the video looks very fake in some way... Is this legit, @SeoY?

P.S. Love the workers! Very Happy Saves a lot of time.

Thanks for the info, SeoY!

As SeoY said, Admin, it seems to be legit, but available for developers only and too heavy to run (not worth having something too heavy just to have that feature, sorry, maybe in 5 years MC has something built in that works like that).

Well... having voice on Minecraft would be great enough, since we'd have to type less Wink (even though my spoken English skills are very poor, non British/Scottish European people usually have very clear pronunciation, so it could be a time saver even for me).

Maybe we can use something else instead (non Minecraft related, like an instant messaging server, maybe even Google Hangouts, I will look forward streaming live anyway in a very soon future, hopefully Smile ), when we are playing, so we can talk instead of typing that much? What do you guys think?

'They' found time because it's SethBling, sponsored by Verizon. Wink
SethBling is already known for building some amazing stuff on Minecraft, mostly with Redstone and Command Blocks. He's very technical, and one of the best builders in that regard. And with a sponsorship of a company like Verizon building that, he has even more devotion to building such things.

To even get that working on the server, we'll have to first develop an usable Bukkit plugin. It's not worth it, really.

And no, I don't think that it's fake in any way. It looks very possible, and I trust that SethBling wouldn't post something fake, or even Verizon when they uploaded that in their own page to advertise it. Any specific part that caught your eye being fake?

I actually prefer typing, talking on a microphone is kind of weird. I don't do it often and prefer talking in person (at least for now). I speak kind of fast, add an accent on top of it and a bad microphone and it becomes a mess. Razz

Thanks for explaining that, SeoY. Quite incredible.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings, I don't know "SethBling". Razz

Well, to be honest the videochatting looked pretty fake to me. But if you say it's Seth "Legit" Bling, then it ought to be.
Are you implying that advertisements usually represent the truth? Ermahgerd

I see...

Well, it doesn't feel fake to me, except for the fact it seems to run "too" well Sad

They probably have some kind of "super" computer to run the server, and very likely a great machine as a client, since replacing blocks that fast doesn't seem something we usually see, at least by the use of commands...

It's ok about the typing, SeoY. I will make an experience sometime with broadcasting, so you can listen to me if you want, while we play, when we meet, of course Smile

Hurt my feelings? Now you're overreacting. I didn't say anything of the sort. Wink

Still, they posted the source code on GitHub, so if it was fake anyone could realize that by just trying it (or reading the code) and call them out on it. That's why they wouldn't advertise it if it was fake, because they would end up looking bad. Why spend money to do that? It's way easier to just make it, as it's just Java Development, than spend all of this effort for nothing. I'm talking about this specific scenario on advertisement for their detriment if it was fake, not about advertisement in general.

Still, it doesn't matter anymore, as it seems they plugged the Boxel Client from GitHub today. It's not available anymore. The Boxel Server still is, but it may as well disappear in the rest of the day.

Maybe Microsoft wants to use it with Skype in the future and pulled the plug?

Haha, very doubtful, as this was specifically developed for Verizon network and with a Video-to-Blocks conversion. That would look horrible on Skype. It was Verizon's GitHub, not Microsoft's. And Verizon spent money on this, there must be other reason than just Microsoft coming and saying 'Welp, we'll take this for our own. Kthxbye'.
Microsoft is really lax on Minecraft stuff, they bought Mojang for that sweet IP profit from all of the shirts/toys/decorations/Creeper-stuff Minecraft sells. You'll be surprised how much that is. Apart from that, they have pretty much kept the rest on Mojang's hands, with a little help on developing the Windows 10 Edition.

That's a good reason to buy that stuff from China Very Happy

About Skype, I don't see many problems, since the "other end" shows your avatar and, of course, Microsoft could just put some kind of skype built in Minecraft if they wanted to use your camera and/or your MC Avatar Wink

The image quality on MC can be solved by them releasing cotton and clay in 256 colors instead of 16 (not perfect, but it would make things really cool when you are building too!), or even a special object, like the command boxes, that could work as a real thing, maybe like a TV or something (I agree they would NOT need the verizon thingy at all, though Very Happy )...

Oh, the impressive part of this is not the video/web browsing in Minecraft. It was the communication with a cellular network. This project really has nothing to do with Skype or anything of the sort. It couldn't be more different. There's no need for 256 colors to increase the resolution. There exists much better ones. For example, this was made almost three years ago.

Really, Microsoft has nothing to do with anything. Verizon just finished the 'experiment' as they called it and removed it. That's all there is.

It is a shame most cool mods are for versino 1.7.x and not 1.8 Sad

Now they want to start updating a few mods, but then we'll be probably using 1.9 by then Sad
