Well, that depends on which Sims version you have.
The Sims 1 takes small space because it's simply an isometric view of the sims and houses. The models of the sims are the same but with a different skin.
The Sims 2 to 4, on the other hand, have free camera in which you can zoom in and out to have a closer look at things. Also, 3D models hugely take up the space of the game plus manipulating these 3D models.

Topic moved to "PC Games" because it is a general question about Sims games, and not so much a complaint against G4TW.
3D models aside, fancy-looking textures (i.e. the 'surface' on the in-game models), different game engines and other in-game features can also make a difference in overall size. I'm especially astonished by the huge size of The Sims 4. TS2 & TS3 were OK in terms of filesize, but the 4th part is overblown for me.
