Tips on saving energy & extending battery life in smartphones. Empty Tips on saving energy & extending battery life in smartphones.

Hello,

Are you 'suffering' from the fact that overusing smartphones typically drains the battery energy very quickly ? Despite modern batteries being very advanced in terms of technology, modern smartphones still use a bunch of energy. Surfing the web, watching videos, listening to music, video-chats: functions that modern smartphone users take for granted, but many underestimate the energy that these functions need. Here's what you should keep in mind or should be trying to do:

1.) Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures. Batteries are susceptible to extreme temperatures on both ends of the thermometer. That means in summer, you shouldn't expose the smartphone to direct sunlight. Accordingly, too much coldness in winter is equally bad. Bag the smartphone, whenever possible !

2.) Turn off functions such as WLAN/Bluetooth/GPS, etc., when you don't need them. Having these services "on" all the time will also contribute to a quick drainage of battery energy.

3.) Make sure to close apps properly (when you don't need them anymore). Just using the "Home"-button will typically not close apps - be mindful of that.

4.) "Energy-saving mode". Many modern phones have such a function somewhere in their options, which can help reduce energy usage.

5.) Turning off the smartphone when not needed. I have made it into a habit of powering the phone off at nights, since I don't need to have it "on". Of course, those of you who need to have it on, because of e.g. job-related reasons, won't benefit from this. WhatDidUJustCallMe?

6.) Not fully charging batteries. Though I'm not sure what to make of this - some people recommended to me that overall battery life can be extended by making it into a habit not to charge modern batteries to 100%. So only charge up to 70-80%, then use the phone. When necessary, charge again up to 70-80%, and so forth.

Arrow Arrow Arrow  In the end though, these tips can only be guidelines, and ultimately another crucial factor is going to be what your habits are, regarding smartphone usage (and to what extent you are able to change less fortunate habits here). Most of you probably aren't going to switch off the WLAN, when you are planning to surf the web again shortly thereafter.  Same with turning off apps that you don't need: most people will just pause the app by using the Home-button. Things like that are one reason I have come to actually dislike these modern smartphones: even if you are disciplined, the energy consumption is just too big, and these batteries need to be recharged every 1-2 days.

Feel free to share your ideas or tips here too, if you want to add anything else !  alien

Thanks for this Carlos!
Another thing to keep in mind is that a brighter screen uses more energy.

Charging it every 1-2 days? Laughing
Make that "at least daily", but I have to be honest, I use it a lot. I prefer browsing on my PC, but I often find myself posting here or on Facebook using my smartphone (now, for example) when I have 5 minutes to spare.

My smartphone is also my main device to take pictures of my kids, and I often use the "offline maps" app as navigation. I also keep track of daily tasks and appointments on the smartphone, and chat with friends on various apps.

Also: don't let the battery percentage get lower than 10-20 percent.
These modern lithium batteries are not supposed to fully lose their charge, as that will actually damage the cells and shorten the lifespan of your battery.

I've been informed that using the phone whilst its charging isn't ideal as thats why cables are so short because its not recommended to use the device whilst it is being charged.
