Is the article really just meant as a sober comparison, or did the author implicitly expect a "finished product" right at game release? In any product there will be errors and imperfections at release. Product development is a process that takes time. Unlike in former times, products of almost any kind are rush-released and tested by the consumer first instead of by the developer/manufacturer (mostly due to economic pressures). Of course things develop over time and user feedback is taken into account.

A lot of PC games these days are released unfinished, for the developers to see if there is even enough demand/interest to continue working on the product. Look at the games on Steam, and how many "pre-release versions" you have there.

I don't know but there were serious stuff missing. Like really, there weren't toddlers, pools, ghosts, gender customization, repairmen, gardeners and so on...  it also had a LOT of bugs, like really a lot. The world map looked so ugly to look at, it looked like a map for a mobile game. Build mode had a lot of missing stuff, as copying rooms, basements and halfwalls. The game should had all these stuff on day one. It's so disgusting it got all these stuff after it by years..
By comparing to The Sims 3, TS3 had more base game content in day one.
*Despite the performance issues* (TS4 has more now in the newer versions).
Still there are things messing as Criminals, Firefighters, Open world (Which will not come as how this game is implemented), cars, and so on..
Not worth 60$ in day one.

I hear ya'...

I am old enough to remember the 1990s. Back then, when you bought let's say a car or household appliances like fridges, microwave ovens, etc., you could usually expect superb craftsmanship quality, and that the things you purchased back then actually do their duty for at least a decade to come. Today, things break down after a few years already. But I don't really see anybody ever complaining about these things? I guess one half of people are too young to remember different times, and those who are older have (grudgingly) accepted the new situation.

Of course you "can" or are allowed to expect more from video games on day one. Especially if you are older and have seen different times, then it is only natural to try and have these same expectations to a changed modern situation. But things don't work like that anymore.

You could have shortened the article by saying "back then [in the early/mid 2000s] games were better".
