Become a Youtube Content Creator with a pirated game?

Post by Princesstomato on Sun 23 Dec 2018, 15:41

Hi,

I've been seriously considering uploading videos of my Sims 4 Builds on Youtube, my main goal for this is because  I think I would enjoy it and prefer youtube to use as a medium to share my created content, not because I aspire to be famous or rich through youtube or anything.

I've been homebound a lot in the last year because of a depression and chronic backpains Sad And besides other hobbies, playing the Sims (moderately) has really helped me a lot to distract me from my pain. I've noticed I've become A LOT better in building in that year and I just feel like I want to share it with the world and I love watching housebuilding videos on youtube and would like to also add to that potentially. The only problem is that I have a pirated game and therefore I won't be able to upload anything to the gallery, would it still be ok to create content without adding to the gallery? Or just uploading a ''drive'' download link potentially? I just don't have the money to invest 200-400 euros in the whole sims 4 series.

Should I just let go of this little ''passion dream''? Or is it still something I can pursue??
I just wanted to ask the forum, I'm very sorry if this is not the right medium for this kind of question!

I think it is a great idea, besides no one needs to know your game is "from an alternate source". Many creators, myself included, do not upload into the gallery, even ones that have legit copies of the game for various reasons, I will not go into this thread. I use simfileshare to load my cc, but basically you could use any reliable hosting platform. So, if this is what you want to do, there is nothing to stop you, Go for it! Carlos is tha man!!!

Sorry to hear about your predicament,

I have a somewhat different opinion than the previous commenter. Depending on how 'serious' you will take such a hobby...people are eventually going to ask for your Origin ID. It is really inevitable. At that point you will have 2 choices:

1) ignore these users
2) appease them by providing an 'alternative' download source for your Gallery creations

And neither option is going to be particularly good in my opinion. 1) will disgruntle people over time. And by default in option 2) the name "CODEX" will show up in your Gallery creations if you choose an alternative hosting platform. Yes, there are tweaks with which you can change the "CODEX" into something else (editing the codex.cfg under Game\Bin). But if people do some digging, and you can be sure that some will, they will eventually figure out that "something's not right". With whatever unforeseen longterm consequences it has for you.

Even if you do neither 1) or 2), I advise you to be super-careful in your videos, to not reveal the "CODEX"-name in the video footage.

After you do the trick with the codex.cfg, you could say you only provide the Gallery items as 'loose files', and without having uploaded them to the actual Gallery.  cat

Plausible deniability, I think that is also what @grieralexander hinted at in his reply before. I suppose that could work out, saying that you don't upload to the actual Gallery, but instead provide the Gallery files as-they-are. I don't know; some people are doing it that way for sure, but I don't think it's all too common.

I still would not recommend doing YouTube (at least not in the way the OP described it) with DRM-free games.
