Problems with "goo.gl" short links. Empty Problems with "goo.gl" short links.

Post by The_gh0stm4n Sat 07 Feb 2015, 08:50

So I was looking through a few things, when I noticed that whenever I clicked on a "goo.gl" shortened link, I got a message saying that the link has been suspended due to "violation of the terms of service".

For now, I focussed only on the TS3 Exchange on here, and noticed that Lady ElDi's sim, as well as both of my sims have been "purged". And I'm afraid though that quite a lot of links have been purged in the same manner. I'm still going to assess the damage (when I get to it, later on, lol).

This is totally messed up.  WhatDidUJustCallMe?

Can you guys look check yourselves a couple of "goo.gl" links and report back ? Thanks in advance. Smile

Hi, Carlos!

Yes, the same message is appearing for me too. It says it has been 'disabled'. It may have something to do with this:
http://goo.gl/policy.html

Google policy wrote:[...]

Do not use goo.gl for URLs that are either executable/package files (like .apk, .dmg, .exe, .zip, etc.) or that contain only IP addresses, or for shortening URL re-directors (either off goo.gl or via other URL shortening services).

Any such use may result in the goo.gl link being disabled. We may also choose to report to appropriate authorities.

[...]

So far, the posts that I've seen have been affected are these (a few of them aren't relevant anymore, but I'll link them anyway):

The list was getting quite long, so I had to stop. I think that the ones requesting for Store Items aren't relevant anymore. Still, this list shows that the amount of links that were 'disabled' is quite large. Some posts in the Google Forums say that it's probable that an automatic Spam filter from Google is causing all of the link destruction. And, as links to packages (ZIP and RAR) are specifically discouraged in the Policy, they may not put them back, and cause problems for future links in our Forum. Maybe it would be a good idea to change the link shortener service, possibly to one like Bitly: https://bitly.com/shorten/

That's just an idea, obviously.

Thanks for the very extensive feedback ! Yes, I figured it may have to do with the actual (pirated) contents that are shortened with goo.gl. As "legal" links that I shortened are NOT affected (for example, my forum signature).

For now, we'll try (I guess) to focus on fixing any broken links in the "Exchange" sections, as well as in our tutorials/guides. As for everything else...we'll have to rely on other users reporting them. Of course, we're not going (to be able) to fix each and every link, but we'll see over time.

For now though, I think I found a possible reason behind this; and a way to still use goo.gl without the risk of the links being purged. But I'm not going to dwell further on that, since the person(s) who filed the complaint are certainly reading this thread here too.  Haters gonna hate I did notify the Admins & other Mods though, about this issue and any further implications for the future.

And yes, there are a variety of URL shorteners, which we will evaluate over time.

Thanks again ! Smile
