Jailbreak Ipod Touch?

I don't know if I am posting in the right section or not.  So sorry if I'm not. 

My son gave me his ipod touch.  It is 2nd Gen. Model: MC086LL Version: 4.2.1 The back says: A1288

I can not download ANY apps because they require iOs 5  .  Well found out you can't update this model of Ipod higher than 4.2.1.  My only option now is jailbreaking it.  Problem is I know nothing about jailbreaking.  Searching around the internet has left me very frustrated.  I want to scream.  

First, is it possible to jailbreak this version of Ipod?  Second, is it hard?  Third, could someone please tell me how or point me to a website that would tell me how. I'm not new to pirating (almost everything on my pc's are pirated), but with jailbreaking I'm a noob.

Yes.  I can't update higher than 4.2.1.  From what I have found on the internet, the 2nd Gen ipod touch (with the specs I put at the top) will not upgrade any higher, since it is out dated.  The only way to update it to ios 5 would be to jailbreak it.  It's pretty crappy if you ask me.  I can't download any apps on it and it doesn't have many apps.  At first I tried to update it, but found that in settings there isn't even an update option.

I'm hoping if I can get it jailbroken then I can update it and put some newer apps on it.  Like I said I have tried searching how to do it and there are a few websites that had links on what to download but all the links were broken.  It's frustrating.

I've never tried that, but it sounds weird: when you jailbreak your device and then update it again, the jailbreak will be lost.

Anyway, try connecting it your PC/iTunes. Then try to update it via iTunes.

For some reason Apple will not allow users with ipod 1st gen and 2nd gen to update to ios 5.  Which means you can't download apps any more and the apps you have no longer update.

I tried to update through iTunes and it wouldn't let me do it either. 

I found Redsn0w online and managed to jailbreak it.  Now my problem is that it is tethered?  Would you know how to untether it?

Just look for an "Untethered" jailbreak, via Google or something.
Look for one that works with your specific iOS version!

I had to reformat my ipod and use greenpois0n to jailbreak it, but I did get it untethered.  Thanks so much for you fast responds.
