Assistance Downloading Sims 3 Expansions

I'm sorry, I'm sure a lot of people have posted this question before, but I've found the answers on the varying threads on this website very different from each other and in many instances, vague.
If someone could please explain to me what I should do, I'd really appreciate it. Bonus Karma for you!
So I downloaded the base Sims 3 Game for Mac.
-The version I downloaded specifically instructed me NOT to update on the popups that come up whenever I launch the game.
On to my questions...
1. Does this mean I can download the patches at the moment?
2. Can I download a couple of expansions, apply the ultimate fix, and then download the rest later?
3. What has your experience been with Sims 3 and all (or any) the expansions on Mac? (I have a Macbook Air and it runs the base game just fine)
If you could please give me your input, that would be awesome. Thanks so much!
