I probably won't be online as often as usual for a while. Just went to turn on my laptop, and after having it for only a few months, it's giving me this super awesome hard drive failure message, and won't boot. So, I'm glad I have a warranty, and I'll be replacing my hard drive. However, this means I lose all of my saved information, my bookmarks and such will be fine, thanks to chrome, but all my other little things I had saved are gone, unless I want to go have somebody restore the hard drive if they can, and that costs more than I can spare. I hope I can get everything set back up quickly, but it may be a couple of weeks before my activity picks back up.

Wow, what a shame!... Good luck with your laptop and I hope you'll find a working solution... Cool
Otherwise we'll be here, so don't worry about anything!

Hello,

Wow that really sucks.
Isn't there some software you can use to recover stuff from the broken drive?
I remember Admin mentioned something about recovering data from a broken HD, look here for possibilities.

There is. I just have to see what hp is wanting me to do with it so I don't void the warranty before I screw with anything.

Chances are they will just throw the old hard drive away and fit a new one, used to work in the returns department for a firm that dealt with faulty dell returns

They're sending me a new one. Took almost an hour on the phone to get through all the diagnoses and to confirm my address like 5 times. Surprised
Getting a new hard drive and a recovery disk set to go with it, no charge. I just have to send back the old hard drive after installing the new one. So sometime next week I'll be back on my computer! Smile

It's all back up and running! Now to re-install all my important things. Thankfully I use google chrome, and got to keep all of my bookmarks synced, so I don't have to search for those again. Smile

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply!
Indeed, I once had this broken (laptop) HDD. It was making this weird "ticking" sound. I was able to take the HDD out of the laptop, put it in an external 2.5" HDD enclosure and recover all data, using special NTFS recovery software.
When everything was safe, I got a new HDD. (Still under Samsung warranty)

If I had more time before having to return the old hdd, I'd probably do that. I need to send it back within a few days so I don't get charged for the new one though. As apparently they are considered a "collateral" replacement, and you get the new one for free, as long as they get the old one back in a non-modified condition.

Hello there,

This can be done within a few hours, depending on the amount of data stored on the HDD.
There's no need to modify the HDD. Just take it out of the laptop, put it in an external enclosure and connect that one to your PC using the included USB cable. Now recover all the data, if possible and then just take the HDD out of the enclosure again and send it back. Smile (Might want to remove (!!!) all your personal data, if possible)
