Port Forwarding in Starbucks tea Shop! ;-)

I just want to start off saying I barely know what I am doing, but I have followed some guides i.e.) https://games4theworld.forumotion.com/t11496-how-to-speed-up-fix-utorrent-downloads-guide

I get the jist, I just want to know if it is absolutely necessary, to "Forward a port" since I use wifi at a Starbucks in Canada ;-) I cannot find what routers they use here, and I doubt someone would be able to disclose which ones they use?

Hello Domino241,

Some background explanations first: if you are at home, you can relatively easily edit your router settings on your own. In VERY simple terms, you basically "log into" your router via an internet browser and edit the settings there. You basically type the IP address of your router into the URL prompt of your internet browser, and you get to the router interface, which you then can edit (occasionally, you might have to enter a password before being able to fully access the router interface).

Now, at Starbucks, you will need to know the IP address of the router. Without going into (in your case unnecessary) technical details, the IP address can be found out relatively easily. However, I'm almost sure that in addition, you will need some sort of password to edit the settings there. And: unless some kind of manager/supervisor at Starbucks allows you to do that or gives you the router log-in details (which is not likely to happen in most cases I guess) you cannot forward any ports.

But then, you may ask some sort of manager at your Starbucks shop yourself. Maybe your Starbucks does have a policy which allows port forwarding, after all ?

Port forwarding can increase your upload + download speeds, but if you "just" want to surf the web, I don't think it's necessary to do that. The thing is this now: if you edit the settings of the router, the changes will usually affect all other customers too, so you will need the "sanctioning" of a store manager in this respect. Or again, you may ask at your Starbucks shop for any pre-configured settings of their router. In which case, you will only need to edit some settings in the application that makes use of forwarded ports (torrent clients, games, etc.) - since their router is already configured.

Again, I assume you only want to surf the web there, and not download tons of stuff (don't they have some sort of upload + download limits anyway ?!). So you shouldn't have to worry about port forwarding. Hope this helps you a bit. Smile

Hi there,

They will most likely not open any ports for you, since it might cause a security hole in their network. They don't expect you to do stuff that requires open ports. (Same with schools and universities)
Another thing is that you're probably not even allowed to do "illegal" stuff on their network, like downloading games via P2P, so you better not get caught.

And last but not least, like Carlos mentioned, they most likely have download/upload speed limits, so all their customers can enjoy a decent internet speed, instead of one person claiming all the speed, leaving the other customers with slow internet.

So to answer your question: no, it is not possible, unless you hack into their system. (Which we obviously do not support in any way...)
