No! No number necessary! That is the great thing about it, it will Generate you a kind of random name (it is actually linear, the smaller the number, the older the user), but you should create your account using your browser, on your PC, since maybe the Phone App may ask for your phone number (not sure about it, though). I have ICQ since 1997 and I never had to give them any real personal information

I was trying to do it on the browser, and now I even downloaded the desktop app to check but everywhere it asks for a phone number to register. It may have been different when you created your account 18 years ago, but it seems that now the only way they allow you to register is by giving them your phone.

That sounds terrible! Sorry to hear that. I will take a look and I will let you know what I find! That would be really annoying!

It is OK. I will create a Skype account, as soon I find a way to have a second Skype running at the same time I have my personal one!

I was just thinking, when you posted this, about the time that I did have an ICQ number. That must've been back when I was barely an adult hahaha. Just around 1999/2000/2001, seems like it was yesterday though. I believe I was so obsessed with chatrooms, groups and chatprograms that I had 3 separate chatprograms: MSN messenger of course, ICQ and Yahoo. I was also in half a dozen "MSN communities" and frequented a couple of MSN Chatrooms. Nothing weird, just, SciFi, pets, religion. Good times, good times but, I'm glad I have come a long way since then. I think I had over 250 contacts on my messenger, ICQ and Yahoo and I considered all of them friends. 

Yeah I was a troubled teenager/young adult.

Cool! I also have an account from the 90's (actually two, at least, one had only seven digits, yay, but I forgot the number, dumb me ).

It was so fun, you could actually see the other person typing, mistyping, typing and changing their minds...

It was REAL time (at least it is how it felt), so cool. We do not seem to have anything like that nowadays, only video and audio for real time comm...

I don't really use any messenger programs, sure, I have whatsapp and facebook. But I'm not on social media all the time. I use whatsapp as an alternative to texting and phonecalls with family. 
As for facebook... I have a number of friends from a number of different countries from the days that I was on MSN and I have a number of family members that aren't that close to me (a sister in the UK) and I share photo's every now and then. Other than that, I'm a human rights activist (birth rights, in The Netherlands) and I'm part of a facebook group that discusses topics on that matter. I'm actually on the board of directors, and we use google hangouts for our 2 weekly meetings. But i don't even have a webcam

That is ok. I would just like to have an instant messaging system for us to use if any of you like, since I use them and if you need to reach me faster that's the way.

I also have Viber, but I do not feel sharing our whatsapp (I hate this one) or our Viber accounts would be good, since it IS our phone number. Google seems to be something everybody uses, I use trillian to be on line at Google Talk (which now is called hangouts, but it works as the good old Talk and does not require invasive/annoying Chrome app running in the background), no video there, though but, also, no personal information shared we do not want to share as well!!

ICQ used to be awesome for that, but now they are requiring you to put your phone number (which they do not share, i think, but some people here might be concerned about any kind of "real life" link, even though it's secred).

Ah! And I am also on line at my Facebook Account, which I use mostly for instant messaging (with Trillian too) and my page...
