KAT taken down.

KAT taken down.
Looks like someone (i.e. American law enforcement, possibly on the payroll of the entertainment industry) got edgy here ?
http://variety.com/2016/digital/news/feds-bust-kickass-torrents-piracy-arrest-1201818775/
It's been reported KAT has been taken down, and indeed, the site is inaccessible. Apart from the old adage that "piracy is bad and takes away real-life jobs", the article linked to does (deliberately ?) look vague and misleading in some respects. For a start, pirate sites do NOT directly host the content they are referring to; they link .torrent files and magnet links. In fact, as far as TPB is concerned, they have been offering magnet links only, due to concerns over legality. Anti-piracy proponents will doubtless dub this as "finding a loophole", but yes, a loophole is still a loophole. Like it or not.
And what is "criminal copyright infringement" ? Is there "non-criminal copyright infringement" too ?
This here is also telling:
Yes, doubtlessly the entertainment industry has armies of lawyers on their payroll, to squeeze real-life events into (possibly shady?) legal abstractions.
I didn't bother to look for other articles on the issue, since they're most likely going to be the same.
P.S. in the comments section of the above article, there is a link to an alleged new domain of KAT. Haven't checked that out yet...

MPAA chairman and CEO Chris Dodd wrote:“This criminal case is a major step to reduce illegal theft of creative content by large-scale piracy sites,” (...) “Actions like these help protect the livelihoods of the 1.9 million hard-working Americans whose jobs are supported by the motion picture and television industry – and a legal market that generates $16.3 billion in exports for the U.S. economy.”

Re: KAT taken down.
While I am sure that it has happened, there are a number of things in this article that make me question how much of what is stated, is actually true.
Federal authorities have arrested someone in Poland? I didn't realise that Europe was part of their jurisdiction.
And this just makes me LOL:
They will never stop us.
That new domain seems to be working, so yes, point made.

Bilateral or multilateral agreements, which are often tied to close diplomatic and/or economic cooperation. I have seen cases of e.g. neo-Nazi sites hosted in the US by Europeans being taken down eventually, "by request of America's European partners". Whatever one might think about that particular case, that neo-Nazi site may have been legal under the American 1st amendment (freedom of speech), but due to bilateral cooperations, the request of the Europeans was eventually granted.
In the case of Poland, it is known that they have been actively seeking proximity to the US, partly also because of their fear of Putin & the Russians, so that one doesn't surprise me that much.

Re: KAT taken down.
Well, it's not the idea that Poland would extradite, but surely he wasn't initially arrested by Federal authorities. Such things take time, and they make it sound like the feds got on a plane, got off and cuffed this person.
Not saying that I didn't "get" it, but I guess the arrogance hurts.

Ah, yes...In fact, I actually understood the article in the same way as you did...
I also wonder why the comments under the article haven't been "moderated" yet ? Especially given the clear anti-piracy bias of that platform ? But no worries, I got the link of the new domain bookmarked already, in case the comment does get moderated later on.

Re: KAT taken down.
It seems to be overloading already When I tried the link earlier, I got KAT, now I get a note that this site is "currently offline". I will also bookmark it anyway.

I noticed that the alleged new domain uses Cloudflare (in simple terms, a proxy server for websites), which for me would be an indicator that the site is legit...or it could also be a well-coordinated conspiracy by American intelligence agencies too.
But I also noticed the new domain seems to use an older backup database, as e.g. the newest TS4 torrent hasn't shown up there, yet.
Seriously though, TPB also used Cloudflare when they got back online, not sure if they are still using it today (seemingly not anymore). Let's hope that "justice" doesn't focus on these proxy services then, anytime soon. The idea is neat though.

Re: KAT taken down.
One of the main reasons was space: those .torrents files are small, but with millions of them available they can take up quite some space.The_gh0stm4n wrote:In fact, as far as TPB is concerned, they have been offering magnet links only, due to concerns over legality.
Their goal was to be able to "keep TPB up" no matter what, by making the website (literally) fit on a tiny USB stick.
The idea is nice and Cloudfare also provides anti-DDOS services. The "issue" is though, that Cloudfare is an American company.The_gh0stm4n wrote:Seriously though, TPB also used Cloudflare when they got back online, not sure if they are still using it today (seemingly not anymore). Who knows they might be logging everyone's IP addresses... (One of the reasons many thought the "new" TPB was in the FBI's hands back then - being monitored and logged)
