The tiniest of "happy" dances..
Hi all!
As you know my pc died last summer, and despite my best efforts I've been unable to play TS3 since then. I've seriously disliked that fact for at least the past 4-5 months
Anyway, someone threw his old pc at me, and it is a mess! It belonged to a smoker so it stinks and the insides look like it has recently been in a sandstorm. But, it has the exact same MB that I had and the CPU is similar. It doesn't have enough RAM and the gpu sucks (radeon 9000 128 mb) but, if I transfer the RAM and gpu from my broken system, I will have what I had, more or less, which means I can again play TS3! It's not much, not much at all, but to me it feels like it's going to be Christmas and my birthday in the same day lol!
But first I have a lot of work ahead of me. Yesterday was spent formatting the HD and updating windows. Today I'm going to (hopefully) remove the dust inside and place the RAM and graphicscard. The game has already been installed so if all of that is succesfull, I'll be happily playing my game again!

Hello
What's also positive in my eyes is that you seemingly don't have to spend extra money, one way or the other, on a dysfunctional part of that computer. If you had to buy one or more replacement parts, then it's questionable if it's worth it (though on e-bay you might be able to find cheap older parts). In that case, I would probably just save up for a brand-new and self-built gaming PC.
Happy simming again !

LOL!
Well, I know that exciting feeling you had while writing that post.
It's like buying a ruined car and revive it. That feeling when you start the engine after the repair, and she goes VROO-VROOOOO.

Re: The tiniest of "happy" dances..
It took a painstaking effort and a whole lot of frustration BUT! It's working.
First, I just took my old pc's RAM and the graphicscard, reinstalled XP, and it worked, somewhat. But as it turned out, there was something wrong with the HD in that pc and the next day the pc would crash/hang if I looked at it wrong so eventually I took my own HD from my old pc to take it's place, and that worked right away. All I had to do was get some drivers for the motherboard.
I'm a little anxious about starting it this AM though, I had played some sims on tuesday night only to have trouble with the HD the next morning.
I'm not going to use it for anything other than games this laptop won't run, it's not going to be connected to the internet, which spares me the resources for AV etc.
Anyway, its a socket A(462) asustek mobo, a slightly older model than the board I had, the cpu is an AMD Athlon 2400+, which is almost similar to the Sempron I had, and I added my old pc's RAM, HD and GPU.
It runs TS3 much like the old pc did, though I haven't added any store content yet and only a few mods.
So yes, for now this is acceptable.

Good luck with your computer. I hope you can eventually play The Sims 3 care-free (I wish I can, but I can't).

Re: The tiniest of "happy" dances..
Thanks J.T.!
Carefree? Nah. I still can't use all EP/SP's, I'm currently running AMB, Pets, Seasons, Gen and UL. And I don't think I should add to that. As for store content, I will install some "must have" things like the chicken coop and the cow settlement.
I would settle for just the base game at this moment so I am happy about what I've got at the moment
But there's lag, there's that annoying situation where a sim stands at the counter holding her plate for 15 in game minutes before finally getting on with it (to name an example) and this is costing her precious time. She has been late for work a number of times because of this
What really annoys me is that the babysitter leaves at 11PM, but my sim (single mom) works until 3AM, but I suspect that has nothing to do with my pc.
No, carefree it is not, but I can live with it for now
