Game problem

when i first start my game there is not the little square on the side that shows who you can play. the only thing that is showing is the sims 3 control panel at the problem. i also can't click on anyone else or can i click on the actually sim that I'm playing. not sure if i even described the problem the right way. tired to screenshot a pic of it but it kept coming up black.

Just re-do the steps from #2 to #4 here:

Keep in mind though that in order for this to work, you'll need to have at least one of the expansions/stuffpacks mentioned in step #1, installed. Good luck !
