[Tool] Portable The Sims 3 Empty [Tool] Portable The Sims 3

Post by Guest Tue 19 Feb 2013, 23:29

Hi everyone !  [Tool] Portable The Sims 3 294340757
I've made a script to allows anybody to play to The Sims 3 game with expansions/kits and saves EVERYWHERE (a computer with Windows OS is required), from an internal/external hard drive, USB key, etc.
In other words, this tool make your game "portable". Installing the game again and again just becomes a bad memory !

Content of the archive :
"App/" -> Where the game, kits and expansions have to be placed (with english name).
"Data/" -> Where personal files like save files are REALLY stored.
"Script/" -> Where script files are stored. You don't have to modify anything in this folder and sub-folders.
"Read me - Lisez-moi.txt" -> A file that explains how to use the script.
"The Sims 3 Portable - Menu.exe" -> This app is used to launch the menu (hidden script). Automatically run as administrator.
"The Sims 3 Portable - Menu (Run as admin).cmd" -> This file is used to launch the menu (visible script). Works on 32 and 64 Bits Windows but needs to be run as administrator explicitly (right-click on the file).

How it works?
1. It loads your save directory ("Data/[Your_Username]/The Sims 3 Portable/*" into "[Current User]/Documents/Electronic Arts/*". Existing saves are backed up and restored when game (or any game app) is closed.
2. It loads registry keys and values are suitables to the current script path. So, you can move your game and the game still works ! Registry keys are backed up and restored.
3. It temporary associates Sims3Pack file type to the portable game. When the portable game, the portable launcher or the "pause" is launched and active, you can install your Sims3Pack files like if the game were installed.
4. A menu of options is available. You can launch the game, the Sims 3 Launcher, a "pause" instead of the game, open save folder, etc.
Here the options
Spoiler:
5. You can easily modify the language and disable any kit or expansion !
6. No need to install DirectX. Required DLL is copied into the bin folder of The Sims 3.
7. No key required with Game4theworld ultimate fix ! Thank you !

How can we use it?
Before all, your session must have ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS to allows registry modifications. The script programs ask you to have access to these rights, but if you directly run a BAT or CMD file, you need to do it with administrator rights (right-click on the file).
If you don't understand what I wrote, it's not important.
1. In "App" folder, you have to paste (or move) your game and kits+expansions with ENGLISH names even if you want to play with another language. Exemple : "App/The Sims 3" ; "App/The Sims 3 Ambitions" ; "App/The Sims 3 Katy Perry Sweet Treats" ; "App/The Sims 3 70s, 80s, and 90s Stuff"...
Names of game, kits and expansions have to correspond to the names of the REG files in the "Script/Profile/The Sims 3". Any folder that doesn't correspond to these REG file names won't be loaded, so you can disable an expansion or kit just be renaming it.
Or the list of names is available here :
Spoiler:
2. You have to launch the script. Application "The Sims 3 Portable - Menu.exe" can load the script menu and then ask you to enter a letter of your choice (each letter corresponds to an option) and validate it by pressing the "Enter" button of your keyboard. For the first time, you have to leave the field blank and press the "Enter" button without any letter (this normally launch the game).
3. After the first launch of the script, the game is not launched as expected but a file "The Sims 3.ini" is created and opened to be edited.
Add the new line applang=en-US into this file and save it. You can enter the language code you want (en-us,fr-fr,es-es,es-mx,de-de,it-it,nl-nl,sv-se,da-dk,no-no,fi-fi,pl-pl,pt-pt,hu-hu,cs-cz,pt-br,el-gr,ru-ru,ko-kr,zh-hk,ja-jp). Note that if applang variable is not defined in this file, the game will be launch with the default language : french.
4. Now, you know how to open the menu to have access to options or to launch the game ! Re-open the menu and press "Enter" without any letter specified.
If you're not on a weird computer, the game starts and you can play !

Note : You can install your PACKAGE files into "Data/Common Mods (The Sims 3)" directory ! This directory will be loaded into each save of the game, excepted if the "Mods" directory already exists.
Patching the game will be very difficult. The simpliest way to patch the game is to install base game anywhere, patch it and copy the content of the game into the "App/The Sims 3" directory.
You can add you own REG file into the "Script/Profile/The Sims 3" folder to load a new kit or expansion ! Be careful, name of this REG file has to be the same than the name of the kit/expansion folder (in "App").
You can also add the cd key corresponding to the game into these REG files : modify
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Sims\The Sims 3 [Title]\ergc]
@="ENTER YOU CD KEY HERE, WITHOUT MINUS SYMBOL (-)"
Exemple :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Sims\The Sims 3 Seasons\ergc]
@="12345ABCD6789EFGH0123"
(It's not a real key !)
/!\ You have to insert a cd key (even a fake like ABCDEF...) for "The Sims 3.reg" if you want to install Sims3Pack ! If there is no cd key, an error will occurs.

Some users encounter difficulties but for the majority it's ok !
But this version hasn't been tested on Windows XP... I'll test it soon and do some fixes if needed Wink

[Tool] Portable The Sims 3 Empty Re: [Tool] Portable The Sims 3

Post by Guest Sun 24 Feb 2013, 14:22

I've already share a full version of my portable kit for The Sims 3 with all SPs and EPs on a french private tracker (torrent) but I've not a good enough connection to upload it when I want (it would take 3 days of uploading). It's not difficult to make it yourself!
Copy the Caches, Thumbnails, Game & GameData folders of EACH game/kit/expansion into "App/The Sims 3 [Title]". A TXT file is located in "App" and contains correct title to use.
If you have installation files or ISO for the game, you can DIRECTLY copy Caches, Thumbnails, Game & GameData folders WITHOUT any installation. Don't forget to rename the 2 "*.EX_" files by "*.EXE" in Game/Bin.

You want to add a kit/expansion yourself?
The hard part is to update the base game. My portable The Sims 3 cannot be updated because update process will fail ("no installation found").
How I keep my base game updated :
1. I install base game on my computer.
2. I delete all subfolders in The Sims 3 folder.
3. I install the latest full update manually and patch it.
4. New files are the content of the update, so I can copy and replace old files of my "The Sims 3" portable folder (in App).
To add a new kit/expansion, it's very easy :
1. Open "Script/Profile/The Sims 3".
2. Copy the REG file corresponding to the latest kit/expansion (exemple: "The Sims 3 70s, 80s, and 90s Stuff.REG". Rename it by the title you want (exemple: "The Sims 3 University Life.REG").
3. Edit the new REG file (example for University Life) :
Spoiler:
YELLOW parts are parts I've modified. Be carefull, the value of ProductID must be in HEXADECIMAL format (123456789abcdef).
To finalise the new kit/expansion, you have to create a folder in "App" with the same name as the new REG file (in this example, "App/The Sims 3 University Life") where you will place the content of this kit/expansion.

When it's correctly done 1 time, it becomes easy Wink

Extract the content of the downloaded archive : there is an App folder (besides Script and Data folders) Wink
You have to copy (or move) your game/kits/expansions folders (in English : "The Sims 3", "The Sims Ambitions", ...) into this App folder. You can find your game/kits/expansions folders where you have installed them (for exemple "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\...").
Please check names of these game/kits/expansions folders to be conform to English standard names. If names are not conform, just rename your game/kits/expansions folders. You can find English standard names in a text file in App folder.

I hope that this step is now clear !

[Tool] Portable The Sims 3 Empty Add EP?

Post by Guest Thu 09 May 2013, 12:53

First of all, thank you!

I transferred my game to my new PC using an external harddrive, then
copied it all to my new internal HD so it's faster. Works like a charm.
Now
I'm trying to add Seasons to it. Could you explain how that works in
more detail? I Installed it with my local Sims 3 game on my old PC, then
moved the directory to the App folder on my new PC, properly named. I
also tried to change the REG files, but I'm not sure I did it right.
There is one for Seasons already, and the latest EP I have installed is
Supernatural. So I changed the Supernatural REG file the way you
described. Or am I supposed to do something with the Seasons REG file?
Whatever I did wrong, it doesn't work.
Weirdly, I also installed Pets yesterday just by copying the directory into the /App folder, no REG file changing, and it works.

What did I do wrong?

You need to modify REG files ONLY if you want to replace the (fake) CD key by your real CD key. It's optionnal because all game+expansions work without any modification.
I'm sure that your problem is related to the version of your base game : for every newer expansion "installed", you need to patch the base game to detect and load the new expansion. But there is a problem. My script cannot allow users to manually patch the base game even if portable game is loaded.

The only way I know to patch your portable base game is to install the base game (The Sims 3), patch it to the latest version and copy (or move) the updated base game into the App folder.
Or, more easily, you can install the base game (and only the base game : The Sims 3) into the App folder (you can use options when you install the game to specify where the game will be installed. Please use US name -> The Sims 3). You will be able to patch the game manually Wink

Don't forget to re-install the latest NO CD patch !

Thanks for the answer,

I installed the latest patch (via Superpatcher), and the game seemed to load well. It was the "University Life" loading screen though, I don't have Uni installed. Then, when it got to the screen choosing a family, it displayed an empty error message. Nothing in it, just "Quit" and "Retry" at the bottom. I tried "retry", didn't work. "Quit" closes the game.
I thought it happened because the newest patch refers to Uni EP, so I installed Uni. Loaded up the game, the same thing happened. I took out all my saves and mods, no change.
What now?

EDIT: Nevermind. I forgot to use a new crack. It still doesn't work, though. Neither Uni nor Seasons properly show up in-game. Traveling to University, e.g., results in crashing the game. Using the smartphone means clicking "Use ****unknown object", and it will produce a transparent cube. The new UIs show up, though: The "check social groups" one and the one before traveling to university work fine.
Seasons are nowhere to be seen.

I think that the update didn't work properly.
To be sure that the base game is not buggy :
1. Delete "The Sims 3" folder from App folder of the script.
2. Install The Sims 3 where you want.
3. Update the freshly installed base game ( latest superpatcher : http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/TS3_1.50.56.0210xx_update.exe )
4. Install the latest NO CD patch (this website is perfect).
5. Copy the parent folder of the patched base game (exemple : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3") into the App folder. Be sure that you have "App\The Sims 3" folder with the correct name.

Please describe me what you have into your App folder, your "App\The Sims 3 Seasons" and "App\The Sims 3 University" (screenshots would be perfect)

I did all of that again, still having the same problem. I'm including screenshots of the skuversion file to show my game version is indeed 1.5 now, and also the one from the Uni folder, because weirdly it doesn't match. Could that be part of the problem?

SKU are good. Be sure that in every "Game\Bin" folders of each expansion there is no file with EX_ file extension insteed of EXE file extension. If such EX_ file exists, just rename its extension by EXE. That happens when you extract the DVD content directly.
But I'm not sure that is the source of your problems. Your game acts as if it detects every expansion in your app folder. I don't know what is wrong.
Can you disable Seasons and University (juste rename these expansions with a wrong name, like "--The Sims 3 Seasons") and start The Sims 3 Launcher and screenshot it?

If the game works properly without these two expansions, please tell me.

Checked the EXEs, they're all good.
Starting the Launcher with Seasons and Uni disabled produces an error message:
https://i.servimg.com/u/f82/18/29/82/40/launch11.jpg
I says "There was an error during startup - plese see log file for details". The launcher log file is empty, though.
Starting the game without Seasons and Uni yields this:

It seems to be a common error, I had it on my original game too. I used the "Ultimate fix" (https://games4theworld.forumotion.com/t752-the-sims-3-ultimate-fix-should-fix-most-of-your-problems) to get rid of it, as it helped me before. This fixed the launcher error.

(I still get an error about not being able to connect to origin, which makes sense I guess.)

But it didn't fix my game. Game crashing to desktop while loading now.
:/

Wow... I can't say what is going wrong. The faster and easier way to fix it is to install game and all expansions, updates and copy the ultimate fix, try to launch the game and if everything is ok, you can move/copy game folders into "App" Wink
You can delete the "Script" folder (a folder of my tool) to restore the default one.

Good luck and I hope you will be able to enjoy your game !

Wow mate, this setup you have created is brilliant.  It allows me to play my Sims 3 game on the go, and better yet on anyone's computer without technically needing to install anything.  Thank you very much for this Gem.  Any chance we will be seeing an updated version with the new Island Paradise expansion?  Or is there a tutorial I could find to be able to add it myself? (as far as the needed reg edit requirements and any other files I would need to add)  Thanks again for this very user friendly and very unique setup.  Cheers mate. Smile

[UPDATE]

Ok, I didn't realize you had already explained how to add future expansions on page 1 of this discussion.  Now, my question is can the ProductID=dword ...etc be anything? as long as its not used for more than 1.reg file and as long as its in hexadecimal format?  If you could let me know I would appreciate it.  Thanks mate.

Hi Mr Sparky and thank you Smile
Adding a correct REG file is possible but may be difficult for users. You can copy "The Sims 3 University.reg" to "The Sims 3 Island Paradise.reg" and modify names, EP number (09 -> 10).

But, I've submitted an update of my tool. Links are added Wink Rendez-vous to the first post.
