It was the compatibility. I'm on Windows 7, and it just didn't occur to me to change it. But it's all working fine now. Thanks for your help!

Older games tend to have all sorts of issues on newer Windows OSes (7, 8 ). Sometimes, the issue(s) can be fixed by changing the compatibility mode, and I'm glad to hear it worked in your case !
