What is best backup software program?
hi there
previously I had installed my windows. I copy all of my important data and program to my external harddisk.
after I done reinstalling my windows. . i cut and paste my external harddisk files to my computer. Im asked to merge folder, because some folder have same name. I choose yes, because I want files under same folder would keep there just like old days
but what I get is so shocking.because I cut the files, all files and the folders on external harddisk is lost.this is usual, but the problem,at my computer, I lost all files and folder.
for example, folder movie, contain 8 movie from external harddisk and 1 that already there on internal harddisk (because I cut and paste few days after I reinstall windows, so there are some download folder created) .now The movie folder is empty
all other merged folder now empty
so I suddenly lost all my files and folders
I dont wanna do this manual things anymore.what best backup program I could use?
thanks a lot

Hello again,
I don't have that much experience with this "type" of software; I only used "Nero Back-it-up" - or whatever its name was - once, back in the mid-2000s. Maybe someone else has better advice on programs for that.
But first of all: you cannot just "copy + paste" programs, whenever you (re-)install Windows, you should do a proper re-installation of programs and games. It's just not possible to copy + paste program file folders. Theoreticaly, you could try and backup your whole registry, but in general, it's not recommended, since it could cause more bad than good. Besides, you should not "cut" anything on your external hard-drive, unless you want to get rid of it.
You should COPY the files. Or you can mark all the files you want to copy with your mouse, and then press CTRL + C. Go to the location you want to have the files again, and press CTRL + V, to paste them. But again, you should only restore things like music, pictures, videos, documents, game/software installation files, etc.
Everything else should be re-installed properly.

Re: What is best backup software program?
ok.last time I just wanna move all from my external disk to my computer. thats why I do cut, because I wanna empty my external harddisk to create just 1 partition (that time it have 4) .and the files didnt coppied, but the external hdd empty already
I know some program cannot just copy and paste. I just wanna backup it,since some program could, and some other couldnt. so it could save more time
Later I would do copy and delete manually instead of cutting .thanks

Yes, there are some programs that can be copied + pasted to other computers, but this is rather rare. Usually, these are "modified" installers, and those program versions are named something like "portable".
In most cases, you will have to do a proper re-installation.

Hello! What kind of backup do you want to do? File backup or system backup? Do you want to restore the backup always to the same machine or have the option to restore it to another computer?adsuperjenius wrote:hi there

I usually use GoodSync to backup my files to an external HDD (PirateBay has it, just search and install it, he he he).
If I want to make a full system backup (system files, programs, boot etc) I use the built in Window Image Backup thing, even though I don't love it, to be honest. I tried Acronis, Nero, Norton and many other tools and I really didn't like any of them. They seem to backup just fine, but every time I needed a system restore they didn't work on me.
Usually, I have all the installers on my external USB Hard Disk. If I need to format my system, I will install all the programs and utilities manually, then I will copy my files to the computer manually as well or using GoodSync. And I am happy doing that, since I don't need to format my PC every other week...
Please let us know if my ideas help you somehow and if you need further assistance!
Have a great weekend!

Re: What is best backup software program?
thanks for your reply.
I think that goodsync is interesting.whats the different between copy manualy and using that program? we have more secure?
what IM looking, Im not sure. I need to backup some of my important program that could saved. and save another any files, since only some program that cannot backup. I mean, if I have file, document, etc, copy paste them to my ext hdd and copy back to my computer isnt much problem.but some program cant do that, need to reinstall from beggining..
I just have 1 computer,so after reinstall I hope there are not much issue .

Re: What is best backup software program?
Glad you like it! You don't usually copy programs, but the installers only, unless if you are doing a Full System Backup (like an image of your system hard drive), otherwise programs you copy won't work on a new install...adsuperjenius wrote:thanks for your reply.

GoodSync is nice because it syncs folders, allowing you to update old backups without having to copy everything again. It compares both folders, main and backup, and tell you what's different, so you save a lot of time changing only what you need in your backup (so you won't copy old files that are already backed up). It's great if you want to do future backups faster.
I also found out that GoodSync goes around some issues we sometimes may find when copying files manually, like files in use by the system and other things like that...

I usually look at The PirateBay for the latest version possible that has a skull (trusted or VIP uploader), so I risk less...adsuperjenius wrote:after looking at kickass torrent. I found so many goodsync there.they are different size, from 5 mb until 25 mb. do bigger one would risk malware?
This seems to be the latest available version on The PirateBay (I am posting the page link here, not the direct download, per Forum rules and so you can check what you are downloading). I am indeed downloading this new version myself right now, since I have the one before this running, so I use it when I have time for an update or when I format my pc...
Please let me know if you got things working as you'd like.
Have fun!

If you already found a proxy that works, you can copy and paste this at the end of the proxy URL to get to the torrent:
Good luck!

I'm not sure what you're trying to do or what is happening, but basically, you use these proxies like the "normal" Piratebay. You go to that proxy (type the proxy URL into your browser), and it will immediately lead you to Piratebay. Then, look for the download, by typing the name in its search mask.
And if a certain proxy doesn't work for you, try another proxy.

SvenT and SeoY...just a small reminder: direct links to "established" warez and torrent are not allowed here. Not even "part" of the URL should be posted here. If you guys want to refer to a torrent or download, just mention...
1) the name of the uploader and/or
2) the name of the torrent/release
Just because a user has difficulties in figuring this out doesn't mean we can start linking directly to torrent sites.

Sorry about that.
In my defense, I asked Lady ElDi about that torrent link yesterday and she said that it was fine. So, I didn't think there would be any problem if I posted just a portion of the URL for the user to copy in his new URL.

If you want, you can post about it in the Helpers area. Maybe we can make a "new" policy about this. I guess it depends on how strict you interpret this rule.
But many "funny" people tend to post torrent site URLs with dots or spaces "in-between". So these URLS aren't "complete" either, in a way. But I still censor those.
What is clear is this: the forum host doesn't like direct links to "established" torrent/warez sites (Piratebay, KAT, etc.), and "incomplete" URLs and certain "keywords" in posts will most likely raise suspicion too (remember the "trouble" a few weeks ago on here ? Yes, that was because the forum host threatened - again - to delete the forum).
It would be safer - in my opinion - to simply mention the name of the uploader and the name of the torrent. And if a user still has problems, you may PM him/her the complete URL.
//EDIT
And it's OK. I don't consider this a severe mistake. If it's a mistake at all, lol.

I don't understand. I thought that if I linked a page that contains the download link instead of the direct download link (torrent or magnet) was ok, since the user still has the chance to see what they are downloading before deciding...Carlos wrote:adsuperjenius wrote:cant open piratebay..its blocked here.. and with the proxy from games4theworld.org , 404 not found

Well, if we can't give the link to PirateBay here, can I post it to Games4TheWorld Facebook page and link my message there to here, so we'd bypass this host issue? Perhaps using a URL shortener would be good also (like the Google one or tinyurl)?Carlos wrote:SeoY wrote:

Re: What is best backup software program?
Sven...
In this case it doesn't matter whether the user has a chance to "review" the content before downloading. Torrent sites are torrent sites, and their URLS are not allowed here. The same goes for the Facebook page too.
What we used to do - again - for a very long time was this: we just mention the name of the uploader and/or the name of the torrent, without posting any links.
Yes, some people seem to have difficulties of finding torrents on Piratebay, but I personally can't bother with trying to find ways of...I don't know how to say it, lol ? Ways of "circumventing" this common practice of mentioning the name of uploader/torrent.
If you feel you really need to send those links, try sending them via PM.
The question with the URL shorteners is interesting; and you may PM the Admin about it. I personally have never done that, and neither did those other Helpers/Mods, since I came to this site. But that doesn't have to mean anything of course.
Before we get too off-topic, I'd like to ask you to end this discussion here. If you want to discuss more about this, feel free to open a new thread in the Helpers area on it.

Try the following (I'm not sure myself though):
Go to the Start Menu in Windows 7 and right-click on "Computer". Then select "Properties". In the next window that comes up, look at the bottom of the window, under "Computer name" or "Full Computer name" (they should be the same though, in most cases).
So try the names there.

Re: What is best backup software program?
You need to turn your internet OFF before starting to install the program, or it will "call home" and check that your ID is invalid...
Now you need to remove the program, turn internet off and start again. Also, you should block it on your firewall, manually or through the use of a script like the one below:
- Code:
@echo off
REM BATCH FILE CREATED BY CHARLES DE HAVILLAND 20/02/2012
cls
If "%1"=="" GOTO :norulename
SET RULENAME=%1
ECHO Create in/out firewall rules for all *.exe files with the rulename of "%RULENAME%" ?
ECHO.
ECHO.
pause
Echo.
FOR /r %%G in ("*.exe") Do (@echo %%G
NETSH advfirewall firewall add rule name="%RULENAME%-%%~nxG" dir=in program="%%G" action="block" enable="yes")
FOR /r %%G in ("*.exe") Do (@echo %%G
NETSH advfirewall firewall add rule name="%RULENAME%-%%~nxG" dir=out program="%%G" action="block" enable="yes")
Echo.
Echo done.
Echo.
GOTO :Finish
:norulename
Echo Error! - You did not specify a Rulename type - Addfwrs "Rulename"
Echo.
:Finish
Echo Batch ended...
Just copy the script above and save on your computer as fireblock.bat. Then, after you installed your program, you copy this batch file to its folder, open command prompt (Admin), go to the folder you just saved the script and run it:
- Code:
fireblock name
Name is any name you want for the rule that will block everything in that folder to have access to the internet (I usually use the name of the program, as fireblock AdobeCC2014, fireblock Office2013 etc).
Please let us know if you got it working. Happy simming!

Now you need to remove the program, turn internet off and start again. Also, you should block it on your firewall, manually or through the use of a script like the one below:
- Code:
@echo off
REM BATCH FILE CREATED BY CHARLES DE HAVILLAND 20/02/2012
cls
If "%1"=="" GOTO :norulename

You need to uninstall GoodSync, because it already detected you tried to use a fake serial number. Then you turn your network connection OFF (Wi-Fi into Airplane mode and, if you have wired network, unplug it), so GoodSync won't "call home" (contact GoodSync servers to check your licence).adsuperjenius wrote:no no.. it doesnt stupid.. Then, you install GoodSync again and use the keygen as instructed on the torrent files.
After you do that, you run the script as I instructed you and restart your PC.
Only after everything you can turn your internet back on, or you need to repeat everything, because GoodSync will call home to see if it's legitimate by default.

I'm afraid I can't really help with this particular piece of software, but in all honesty:
Wouldn't it be MUCH quicker and easier (as I said somewhere at the beginning) if you simply copy all your important stuff (files, installer programs, etc.) to an external hard-drive or something ? And then once you actually re-install Windows, just start over with re-installing the stuff.
Personally, I never liked this kind of software. If you know what you're doing it might be great, but other than that, I guess it's better to do it the "classical" way, of copying the stuff to an external drive, and then re-installing one-by-one.
