Cannot update sims 3 after following the sims 3 ultimate fix to the word. [SOLVED]

To start off, I'd like to apologize for having to post a sims 3 related problem in here because I'm sure you're sick to the teeth with them, but so be it.

My problem is that after installing Sims base, generations, pets, fast lane, late night and ambitions and then following the ultimate patch fix to the word I still get an unvalid file error whilst trying to update to 1.29. I've tried maually updating, but get this error:

I'm using Windows 7 and the file was downloaded via mozilla firefox...

I've had several attempts at installing this. I followed the tutorial on the forums to no avail. My first attempt involved more expansions, but on the second an third attempt I only used the ones above. At one point I could run the un-updated game via the .exe but it seems to crash as soon as I get into buy/build mode. (I'm aware of the solution thread to these types of crashes but none of the fixes helped me. I tried using compatability mode, the dep things and various other solutions without any good.

Currently I have the game un-installed and ready for another go, but I'm waiting here for some sort of help. Whether Ive made some sort of horrible error whilst installing (I pretty sure i haven't though) or what. Either way, I appreciate any sort of reply and hope that you get back to me as soon as possible.

Please open the .rar file you downloaded using only WinRar, which can be downloaded from www.games4theworld.org . (If you use any other software than WinRar, like WinZip or 7-zip, the files will get messed up!)
When
you've opened the file using WinRar, select áll the files in it and
drag & drop them to a folder on your Desktop. When the extraction is
done, close the .rar file and open the folder on your Desktop.
Now,
start by reading the included "# Installation Guide.txt" and you should
be able to get the game to work yourself. Good luck!

Okay, I've been using 7zip so that's probably my problem. Thanks for the quick reply, I'll post again when I'm done and hopefully it will have worked!

Though, I wonder why you get that error when applying the patch. If you downloaded the manual patch from the link provided on the Forum, you'll get an .exe file and not a .rar file, but OK.

Yup, that's the error I get when I try to apply the exe from the forum's download link. When I tried the normal update method I kept getting the 'unvalid file' error.

Currently installing. Hoping that winRar will work better when it comes to the fix.

If you have any more problems, please let me know.

Before I actually do anything, I'd just like to verify something in the tutorial, it says do not apply any cracks whilst installing expansions. Having this in the third step confused me, but I went by the "This means that you do not need any "# Crack" folder for installing the expansions." and assumed that pets+generations didn't need to be cracked either.

Is this correct?

That's no problem, don't worry, the Fix will fix it all for you.

It seems that using WinRAR over 7zip has made no difference at all. I went through and reinstalled everything, following the tutorial, got the stage where I needed to update. Sill got the 'Invalid file' error. Updating manually doesn't work either. Still get that weird error.


*edit* I've read here that generations is really buggy, do you think that not installing it and just sticking with Pets would make any difference?

The manual patch came directly from the link here on the forums. I'll try re-downloading it to see if it corrupted during the download - just in case.

I'll post back here with a result.

Yup, must have corrupted whilst downloading, it worked perfectly the second time around and I'm currently playing the game fine. Haven't had any crashes realting to the buy mode and it's running flawlessly.
