Mass Effect help

I downloaded and installed Mass Effect without a problem while following much of the advise from these forums. I used winrar, did the map fix, and tried running the program directly from the .exe file. I keep getting an error message when trying to run the program:

Please try the following:

1. Uninstall the Game.
2. Restart your PC.
3. Open the .rar file you Downloaded using WinRar, which can be Downloaded from www.games4theworld.org . Now, select áll the files in the .rar file and then drag & drop them to a folder on your Desktop.

4. Open this folder and start the Installation by reading the included "# Installation Guide.txt".
5. Install the Game ánd apply the Map Fix.
6. See if the Game works now.

ok I did that exactly and the same general protection fault window comes up same as it did when i try running the .exe file. when I try to launch the regular launcher, the configuration comes up and immediately stops working and windows shuts it down.
