Well, there are several techniques you can use (Bittorrent encryption etc.), but you can't rely on them very much.
If you want to be maximum protected, use a (paid?) VPN service that also works with Bittorrent clients.

Admin do you use VPNs? And what if i get caught downloading torrents? Is it a big crime? and what will be the consequences?

No, in The Netherlands ISP's don't really bother if you download, haha.

I can't tell anything about the consequences, since laws are different in each country. But look at it like this: millions of people use torrents.
But in the end, it's all your own responsibility.
