Unwanted phone calls.

Due to some bad experiences in the past, I've arranged that my new phone number is not in any public phonebook in Austria. Which means that if someone dials random numbers on the phone, the chances of "reaching" me are like winning in a lottery.

Anyway, I recently got three voice messages from an unknown person (at the time that person spoke these messages, I had my mobile phone turned off, so I couldn't answer the incoming call).

So after listening to the first message, I was dazzled and disturbed, if you wish to call it that way. That guy spoke some threats, and at first I didn't know what that person was talking about. Shocked

Was that threat meant for me ? But after listening to the second message, I realised the message was meant for another person. So far so good - or bad ?

Think about that situation - was that person maybe announcing some crime ? We all know these stories about people announcing murders or other crimes via Facebook, Twitter or any other means. So my first thought was to notify the police, but then I reconsidered.

In a legal sense, these voice messages are no legal offences, even though from a "human" point of view they may sound like threats. Moreover, Austrian police tend to be...well, a bit lazy, to put it nicely. They tend to laugh at such things. So I left it - whether that was the right thing, I can't tell.

Did anyone experience something similar ?

Several times. What's the problem exactly? You can block certain phone numbers just like you can block a contact on Yahoo, Skype, etc.

! You should try to trace the phone number and report it... Oh, and someone randomly did text me and said he was going to strangle me.... I didn't even know the guy, LOL. If anything, this is probably the person texting you...

Still, I think I'd report it. To be on the safe side. Perhaps you an report it online? That way you don't have to deal with laughing and lazy police.

Downloading isn't illegal here Wink

Besides I wouldn't dream of comparing piracy with getting a gun. Those companies are still making huge profits. Whereas a gun could ruin lives.

EA isn't losing any profit from me, because I simply wouldn't play TS3 if I wasn't downloading it.

I think you mean "Imagine if you got fired at". Well the answer is simple, I'd fire back, because I'd have a gun.

People can kill other people without guns. Violence existed way before guns, hell, weapons were invented. Completely legalizing guns would solve several problems:

-If outlaws want guns they can get them anyway, it's really not that hard to buy illegal firearms. Legalizing them means law-abiding citizens have access to guns as well. In other words, they can defend themselves.
-If everybody has guns, people will think twice before using them, especially in this paranoid time. Say three people are in a room, and they all have guns pointed at eachother's heads, do you really think ether one of them will risk pulling the trigger?
-Less guns will be sold illegally, more will be sold legally, that means income for the government as well.

Note that I said "completely legalizing" guns. That means being allowed to carry firearms and ammunition anywhere (or almost, wouldn't want a new 9/11 now would we) without some cop hassling you.

Well, considering the USA has one of the highest deathrates due to gunshots, I doubt it's a good idea to legalize it. I suppose you never read any stories of children shooting each other accidentally. Of course, you could argue that the parents should keep the gun safe. It's just that they don't. And you can keep yours locked away, but that doesn't mean your neighbour does as well. And having a gun is not the same as knowing how to use it. If someone wants to rob you, or your home, he's more likely to be prepared to use it than most. Especially if he's at risk of being shot at. No, I don't agree with your statement at all.

Perhaps you live in a dangerous country, but I would have no reason to own a gun at all. I have lived in a neighbourhood that was considered dangerous, one of the worst in the area, and I still never felt that unsafe.

If the death-by-gunshot rate wasn't so high the death-by-blunt-force rate or others would take it's place. Just cause they died by gunshot doesn't mean that legalizing guns would have saved them. If you want to kill someone badly enough chances are you'll consider every option, from choking them with a pillow in their sleep to slowly poisoning them with arsenic. At least guns make a crap ton of noise and leave evidence behind.

The same goes for accidental deaths. People who accidentally shot themselves, people who didn't secure a loaded gun properly from their kids, they are stupid, chances are their stupidity would have killed them eventually anyway. To the people who accidentally capped their own a** I say good riddance. I feel sorry for the kids who play with loaded guns but those kids probably wouldn't have survived long with parents like that anyway. I'll also have you know that legally sold guns in the US come with both a safety mechanism (which requires a bit of strength and know-how to disable) as well as a safety case and key. So, sorry, but bad parenting is to blame on this one.

Illegalizing guns just cause people are stupid isn't fair for the rest of us. If you really want to illegalize something, illegalize alcohol. How many people died cause of alcohol? All for the sake of getting s*** faced? Or cigarettes, how many houses have burned down cause of them? How many of us (non-smokers) are gonna get cancer by the time we hit 40 cause we breathe those idiots' poison every day?

I do. But it's dangerous anywhere, appearances can be deceiving. Until the crime rate in a country reaches 0, nobody is safe.

Westerns and reality are two different things. No it hasn't happened, put yourself in their situation and tell me that you'd pull the trigger, go ahead.

There are very few reasons I would (My 3 reasons being 5 yo, 2 yo and 4 mo). But I know people who would.
But no, I'm against violence. I would probably not get into a situation that would require me to draw a gun at all.
Still, I think I'm a minority. I really do.

And as for bad parenting, yes, you're so right. Those parents are stupid. But they could be your neighbours, it doesn't have to be bad judgement on your own part.

But like our master sergeant (back when I was in the military) said: "The hardest opponents to beat are those that look weak" - while that's certainly an overgeneralisation, I think he's got a point. I've practised "militarised" MMA and a bit of armed combat, but even I would think twice before messing up with that angry/crazy girl. Laughing

, which is partly due to the Austrian mentality, in which PHYSICAL violence only plays a minor role. Make no mistake, these folks can still be quite nasty, but in their own way. And I would even prefer the girl in that video over most Austrian ones (no, that's no joke).

But to return to the topic, I would avoid messing up with a mentally deranged or really angry person, if possible. Wink

I almost forgot that topic, but I actually talked to the authorities, but I only got the answer (what I actually expected) that since the "threat" is not an offense in the legal sense, they are not planning to do anything.. Shocked

But I'm afraid this a world-wide phenomenon.

And about that girl, yes, I actually thought about giving her a chance. But then I re-considered...the funny thing is I can't tell you exactly why; but I guess it had to do with "intuition" - and with the fact that this girl didn't seem (in my eyes) to get too much attention from boys; and any "experiments" in such a case might not be a good idea, for both sides. But let's not get too off-topic now, all of this could be part of a new topic. Wink

Meh, I just ignored it. I usually don't let stupid stuff like that get to me, I'm really laid back. Some random girl who couldn't spell for **** messaged me that her mom was a cop, and she would have her beat me up... Once again, I didn't even know who she was! Facepalm
