Stuck on saving

I'm sorry to hear that you lost some gameplay progress, but unfortunately, this "endless saving" happens sometimes, even with strong computers. Although my desktop computer can easily handle the Sims 3 and all expansions, I always save every 30 (real-life) minutes, and after about an hour of playing I exit the game for a while, to "relieve" the computer and to reduce the "stress" on it. Occasionally, this endless saving also happens to me. For the future, you should do the same as I do (shorten playing sessions, saving often and exiting the game for a while).

Before you re-start the game next time, go to My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 and delete all contents of the folder Currentgame.sims3. Then re-start the game and play on.

Go to My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Saves. Look for the name of your savefolder, and move it out, to any other location; but move the folder out of this "Saves".

Then, look if you have another folder with the name of your savegame (in "Saves"). It should have a ".backup" ending. You rename the folder so that it looks like the one you moved out before, so just remove the ".backup"-ending.

Re-start the game and try saving again.

Also, can you try the options "Save as..." or "Save" ? Do you always get the same result ?

Also, what I forgot to mention before, you should regularly backup the folder "Saves" (My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3), to a safe place, like an external hard-drive or a USB-flashdrive.  

How often you do that is up to you, but I guess it also depends on how often you play The Sims 3.
