You don't need to do anything.
Installing a new expansion does not affect your saved items!

Hello,

Shamrock is right. However, sometimes saves might "magically vanish" or become corrupted after a patch or installing an expansion. If you think the saves are insecure, go to (My) Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Saves, and backup all the folders inside. Just copy and paste them to Desktop, and then after installing an expansion, move them back (My) Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Saves.
