Password security: how seriously do you take it ?
Hello,
In light of another internet "security glitch" (see this here), how do you treat your internet passwords ? Where do you keep your passwords ? In how many places ? And what about password complexity ?
As for me, I'm pretty much "oldschool" in that matter: I actually keep written records of all my passwords, usernames and related data in a small (paper) notebook. And I edit the data there, if necessary. And yes, my passwords are long and complex enough to "entertain" potential hackers long enough. (of course I know there is no "safe" password, but at least you should make them complex).
Unfortunately, many people underestimate the importance of that. With the internet being more and more important and complex (e.g the rise of "social media"), I'm almost sure that nearly every internet user has made "accounts" at various internet platforms. However, if, for example, your computer gets stolen, lost or damaged, what do you do if you don't have a backup of some sort - to revert at least some of your passwords ? Strictly speaking, you should even backup your e-mail provider passwords somewhere, as they usually become very important when it comes to resetting passwords/accounts of all sorts.
Now let's hear your opinions on that !
P.S. according to Forumotion support, it's not necessary to reset your passwords here at the forum (and all other "Forumotion"-forums too).

Since all of my accounts doesn't have any valuable information, then I don't have to change it

Re: Password security: how seriously do you take it ?
well ,forme my main email addresses is my most important password. I register at many forum, sosial media, etc, with same email address. so whenever I forgot the password, I use that email .
but for email,my password usually changed by my mood. for example, my friend named Yoan owe me Rp 20000 (about US$ 2) at 2012 december, at christmast. because Im afraid I forgot that , so I change my password with her name and her birthday date until she give me back the money
sometimes I also changed it with number and random character, whenever I think they are fun
for me email password is for fun. but I never noted that.
but forum password is depends. for forum like this, that I just use my computer at home to browse here, I just create random password ,and use forgot password feature even tought I remember the password.if you ask why, that because if we are forgot password, this forum would generate difficult one, so I remember that on my browser, and logged in with that. later if my computer stolen or broken, then I use the new password this forum gave me..

I have taken it seriously before but never like I have now.
Ebay has started locking people out of their accounts just so they can update their passwords.
I should know...I'm one of them. -.-
I got it worked out..but wow. lol

Re: Password security: how seriously do you take it ?
I guess I take it somewhat seriously.
For my emailaccounts, 2 of them have the same password and the ladyeldi account has a unique password.
My facebook account has a different password than any other account.
My password on here is a complete BS word that only makes sense to me.
But I don't often change my passwords, because I get confused. The only password I change regularly is the one I use for online banking.
As for forums, I always used a variation of the password for my emailaccounts. But I find that, nowadays, I don't visit forums much anymore. Rather, I join discussiongroups on facebook. Facebook is my only social media account.
I don't have written records of any of my passwords, I keep them all in my head. I would probably forget where I put it if I wrote them down

Re: Password security: how seriously do you take it ?
I see that there is some awareness about this issue - and that's good ! As for me, I'll still go the way I always chose - namely the written way. Keep it coming !
Yes, social media seems to be prevailing over the "classic" forum, [/offtopic]. And of course, online banking is highly risky - and the safety measures connected to it should be taken very seriously !

Re: Password security: how seriously do you take it ?
I have multiple passwords, varying from easy to übercomplex , and it depends on the website where I'm registering which password I use.
No offense meant, but for the G4TW forum I use the easy password, mostly because my account here isn't so important.
I don't change my passwords often, mostly because it would take forever to change them all, and I'm a bit of a lazy person myself .
Also, I think it isn't safe to keep written copies of passwords (this is even strongly discouraged by some companies - like banks), online services or local programs are better IMHO.
But of course, the safest way is to remember them, as long as you don't forget them xD.

If a hacker really wants to hack into something, like a bank, online service or even "local program" (= where usually "insider knowledge" plays an important role), then that hacker will manage to do that. Whereas breaking into a house and looking for a book is probably a bit more difficult. And of course, if you're not careful though, then it doesn't really matter how you keep your codes: they will get compromised sooner or later.
What might be a good idea though could be several different sources of the codes, offline as well as online, in case you lose access to a source or forget where you put your book.
