Bypass launcher.
Having searched for how to start the game directly, bypassing the launcher, I get conflicting information ...ultimately - "it depends on what version of the game you have".
Since I have the version from this site, which .exe do I use to start the game directly?

Re: Bypass launcher.
Hi! You should use the exe from the "newest" expansion you have installed (if you have them all, you should run "Into the Future").
Sorry! Please do as Carlos teaches below, my brain was not working properly when I wrote the stuff above, my bad

Use the TS3W.exe file (or a shortcut to it). The file is by default located in C:\Program files(x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin. If I'm not mistaken, the expansion shortcuts that are created during installation will start the launcher; but then I haven't used those shortcuts in a long time. I myself only use that TS3W.exe shortcut.
Also, there is a point about the thing with the "game version". The version from Games4TheWorld is based on the original retail DVD version of the game that was released in 2009. When installed, this base game version will have the patch level 1.0.631. In this "older" game version you can bypass the launcher with the aforementioned method. And you don't need Origin installed on your computer to run this base game.
There is also a "newer" base game with the default patch version 1.42.130. This one needs to run with Origin, and you cannot bypass the launcher there. I'm guessing that if you start this base game via your Origin library, you will at first get to the launcher, and then you need to start the actual game from said launcher.
I actually can't tell if the Ultimate fix from here will work with this newer base game. I suggested to several people on here to try it, but so far nobody has posted back.

Re: Bypass launcher.
Lol, still conflicting advice.
But that is generally what I gleaned from my research, in fact one site had a nice tabulation: if you have the Steam version, do this; if you have the disc version, do that; if you have the digital download, do such-and-such (I thought Steam was digital download; actually, aren't all downloads digital).
When I start the program, just as the launcher appears I get a pop-up "could not contact Origin", I close that and start the game from the launcher arrow. But since the only other use for the launcher, in this version, is to install sims3packs, i see no need to run it otherwise, so wanted to create a second option and have a "Sims 3" and "Sims 3 Launcher" in the menu (I don't use desktop icons, finding a menu hierarchy works better for me).

Have you tried my suggestion already ? And yes, in the same location that I mentioned before, you should find a file named "Sims3LauncherW.exe". You can create a shortcut from it and name it - yes - something like "TS3 Launcher". That's what I did too.
I cannot give any information about the Steam version though, sorry.

If you mean the Steam installation location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\The Sims 3\Game\Bin

Re: Bypass launcher.
Nothing Steam on my system ...I loathe Steam.
I had of course noted the .exes in the root directory and the launcher.exe is called by the menu link, but was unsure whether my direct link should point to ts3w or one of the EP .exes (been bitten too often trying things on a computer, I'd rather ask). Haven't played in a couple of days but will do that this evening (only 7PM, the sun is still up, I'm feeling singularly lazy, having just had dinner, and that sofa looks extremely inviting, but I've still errands to run ....reality continues to impinge on my game time).

Can you "right click" the icon in your windows task-bar while running the game, and "pin" it?jgf wrote:Nothing Steam on my system ...I loathe Steam.
