Sims 1 Complete Collection Build/Buy Mode Issues

Hi guys, Sims 1 installed and runs perfectly aside from when I go into build and buy mode (aside from a few pages of floors and walls) the icons will not load, for example I can click on the blank icon and then drag the mouse onto the screen and it will show me what item I've selected but I can't see the little previews in the menu!! thanks very much for your time!

bumping. same problem 
+ no sims showing up in CAS, no UI boxes are showing either 
(help tips, events, etc)

everything else works swimmingly but this kind of makes the game impossible
