Should I install Update 1.44.88.1020?

Is it necessary to install the update? I'm worried it will cause errors when installing future packs.

I know it fixes errors and those things, but I previously installed a patch update, before Get to work expansion pack and when I tried installing the gtw pack and the game crashed continuously, which forced me to reinstall the pack without the update.

Then you probably did something wrong. As long as you install updates according to the guide you will be fine.

I get the frustration of many Sims-fans on an abstract level ("new patches fix a few things, but they always also introduce new bugs"). But then again: what else do you want us to suggest here? On the one hand you ask whether you should install a patch. Then you - accidentally? - give yourself an answer by mentioning negative experiences in the past, with those updates.

My opinion is that generally, I recommend using those updates. But ultimately you will have to decide yourself, of course.

It is not absolutely needed to play the game; it is "only" a follow-up patch for the Seasons DLC.
