I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
So, I wanted to try something different. I hadn't played The Sims Medieval in forever, so I decided to download it again on the G4TW downloads page. I get a good game started, completing some quests. But I wished I could enable some more options, especially CAS during gameplay.
So after I updated the game to the final version and put the Crack files into the Bin folder I studied up on what I could do. First I learned how to mod the game. I created the Mods and Packages folders, downloaded the Resources.cfg file and put it in the destination folder (C:/Program Files x86/Electronic Arts/The Sims Medieval), and I also downloaded the d3dx9_31.dll file for script mods and put it inside the Bin folder.
I found a mod by DeeDawg that allows players to enter into CAS with full edit options during gameplay, and I found a mod with multiple sliders that I read about that was for The Sims 3 but also worked for The Sims Medieval and put them in the Mods/Packages folder.
The next part was a little tricky. I read up about debug cheats but it required me to edit the Commands.ini file in GameData/Shared/NonPackaged/Ini and change the TestingCheatsEnabled= value from 0 to 1. As my permissions were not correct to allow me to do that I had to look up how to do that. As I wanted to keep things simple for starters in the game that was all I did. Now, when I try to load the game it crashes after the loading screen is finished. What did I do wrong?
Gatekeeper Edit: paragraphed for easier readability.

EDIT//
Regarding the mods files/folders:
I noticed you places these in C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims \Medieval
As far as I know they should go under My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims Medieval.

When you get a permissions error, you can also save on the desktop, and then copy/paste the files(s) from there, to your install location of a game.
As for the Commands.ini, do you have a backup of the file? Whenever you experiment with anything new & unfamiliar, try making it into a habit of backing up the original files before you replace them with modified files. I'm not on my main computer right now, but if need be, I can re-upload the file later. Did you install just the Medieval base game, or the Pirates/Nobles DLC too? Did you apply any other patches, etc. ?
I was thinking that maybe you un-knowingly changed more in that file, than just that one single line that you mentioned.

Wrong.

Don't.
The game is almost un-known (it never was very popular, I think mostly because there are many other/better Medieval-themed games out there), so not many people are familiar with the details.
I think it may be easier for the OP to just install that 2.00113 patch + Pirates & Nobles, if they didn't do that already. This should restore the 'damaged' file in question. But let's see.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
I did in fact get the Pirates/Nobles expansion before I updated to the final version of the game. I only edited the Commands.ini file in the base game though.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
In order to change the Commands.ini file I had to rename it though. I renamed it Commands2.0.ini and moved the original out of the folder. I still have it though. But all I did was change the TestingCheatsEnabled= text value from 0 to 1.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
That should sufficient as long as your amendend file Commands.ini is still named as Commands.iniVoID2812 wrote:In order to change the Commands.ini file I had to rename it though. Move (not copy) Commands.ini to your Desktop.
Open it with Notepad
Amend TestingCheatsEnabled to read 1
Save the file
Move it back to the original location

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
So I need to rename it back to Commands.ini. Okay.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
Well I renamed it back to Commands.ini and the game is still crashing after the initial start-up. Great.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
I needed to re-download and re-install the game myself, hence the delay.
Here is the original Commands.ini file, as per version 2.0.113.00001, see the window "attachment". Put that file back into your own installation and try the game again.
Edit: I was hoping to make it work with the Forum's attachment system, but it didn't work. Download the file from here instead:

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
So, I still had the original Commands.ini file that I didn't rename. I changed the TestingCheatsEnabled= value to 1 and saved it in the ini folder. Again it crashed the game. Changed it back to 0, still crashes. This is ridiculous.

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
At this point I'm going to assume I will have to uninstall and reinstall the game. If it asks me to rename the Commands.ini file again after making changes I will not save it.

Have you tried to play the game without your mods ?VoID2812 wrote:At this point I'm going to assume I will have to uninstall and reinstall the game. If it asks me to rename the Commands.ini file again after making changes I will not save it.
Move (not copy) the mods folder to your desktop

Re: I think I broke my game... (The Sims Medieval)
It could also be a problem related to the DEP; try adding the TSM.exe to your DEP exclusions. See this here if you are unfamiliar. This was written for The Sims 3, but you can apply the part about the DEP to almost any application.

I also imagine that, because the game is somewhat similar to TS3, that this here may also help you; maybe not specifically for the crash at startup, but later down the road:
