HDD update Empty HDD update

Post by Guest Sun 09 Dec 2012, 23:09

Good evening all,

Just wondering, without opening my laptop up and physically measuring my HDD how can I tell if its a 2.5 or 3.5inch? I can find out its SATA 3 but nothing else. Its a Samsung RF711-S06UK

Also, when/if I upgrade my HDD how do I do a clean transfer, such as straight over from this current HDD to the new one? Without any ball-ache or messing about.

Thanks

//EDIT

Never mind, just downloaded Speccy from piriform, what a company ahah
discovered it was a 2.5inch SATA 2, second question still pending

All laptops have 2.5 inch drives. (Or at least literally all, not sure if any do have 3.5 inch, I haven't noticed any with it tho.)

Probably get a transfer kit, or external 2.5 inch drive enclosure, and then just use your old one as a external harddrive.

Just wondering what you are planning to do, just upgrading to a new harddrive, and a new OS, or still using the same OS. Know what kind of harddrive you are upgrading to, I see specs with googling you laptop of a 750 GB 5400 RPM, are you going for a higher GB, and/or a 7200 RPM or SSD?

Hello there,

Laptop, right?
If you plan on doing a clean installation of Windows 8 (Which is highly recommended, instead of upgrading), you can just take out your current HDD and replace it with a new one.
Then, install the new OS on the new HDD. When Windows is up and running, just connect the old HDD using something like an external case and then copy everything from the old HDD onto the new drive.

Easy as pie!
