Around this time last year, I downloaded Sims 4 off this website and then got an email from my internet provider about pirating. How has everyone avoided this?

Okay, I'm not totally sure how to explain this  and if this is the right place. If not, I apologize. 

This time last year, I had read through everything on the Sims 4 download guide, and did it how they said to. I already have the base game, so I did it how you do in that case.

While the expansions had been downloading, my dad came in asking who was pirating games. He told me he got an email from our internet provider (I think thats what I remember) and that they listed a couple of Sims 4 files as what triggered it or whatever, and then said something along the lines of this being our last chance (?) and that next time we would lose our service and couldn't get it back.


Again, it been a year so I know I'm not totally remembering what was said, but it was along those lines. I did everything how it says, and I'm confused as to what went wrong? Why were we flagged? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it because Id love to be able to have all of the expansions    My sister did the exact same thing for herself a year prior, and she never had any problems at all?

Because there are companies that monitor torrents and report when someone is downloading copyrighted content to their ISP.

You have two options: download torrents when using VPN (and use one that has "killswitch", you don't want your real IP to leak out accidentally) or use direct download links.

Yup, that's correct. You're at risk only when you download a torrent without VPN.

Why I am mentioning this? No special reason at all. Except I suppose to illustrate that American Internet Service Providers are basically doing everything that corporations ask them to do. Also regarding those "torrenting warning letters".  

That aside, it's also worth noting that should you decide to purchase a VPN service later down the road, you should generally aim for paid VPN services, and expect good services to cost around 4-5 USD/Euros per month, minimum. Recommended services (paid plans) are NordVPN, Windscribe, VPN.ac or ProtonVPN. NordVPN I believe even has a plan that would cost about 3 Dollars per month, but you have to order a plan for 3 years, so the total bill would be roughly 100 USD for that period.

You should also know that Internet Providers, corporations and politicians who enable them...are aware that these measures will curb down piracy. Most people will be too afraid to torrent more. They might not ask for further information (such as direct downloads). They might not know about VPN services. They might not be able or willing to spend extra money on VPN services. And at the end of the day, maybe these torrenting warning letters will lead to some people spending money on overpriced products. Such as those Sims 4 games.

If possible at all for you, try saving up for such a VPN service in the long run: besides safe torrenting, it will greatly help with online privacy in general.
