It can happen no matter how much RAM you have, but it's less likely to happen if you have more than what the game requires.

That depends on what expansions you have, but I think the max required so far is 4GB. 8GB is therefore plenty of RAM.

Hello,

The Sims 3 is a 32-bit application. Therefore, it can never use more than a maximum of 3,7GB ram.
This has been criticized a lot because yes, eventually everyone has the potential to develop error code 12. That's not to say that you will develop the error, it depends on your RAM, the size of your save game and sheer luck.
I've only experienced error 12 once since 2009, with only 1GB RAM and back then I had all expansions (up to Pets I believe).
There are some tips to at least delay the occurrence of error 12 here.

Hello,

With Porter, you can pack up multiple sims in a neighbourhood and they will be saved as 1 household. You can then transfer them to a new game, if it's the same world, you don't have to worry about duplicate sims, and all relationships will be preserved.

Hello,

Ok, you can try it with the backup save, you'll loose a little progress though. To do that, go to your saves folder and drag yoursavegame.sims3 out of that folder and on to the desktop.
Now rename yoursavegame.sims3.backup, remove the .backup part, start the game and load your save.
It's possible that your save game has already become too corrupted to do this.

Hello,

Ok lets see. Do you have errortrap? If you don't, try it, it may just be enough to at least save your family to the bin.

Hello,

And what if you turn of all unneeded processes in the background before starting the game? It may make a difference when saving your family to the bin or using porter on them.

Hello,

I'm starting to go out of ideas to be honest. But to make sure we've covered all possible causes, do you have mods or cc (not store content) at all? Aside from Porter, errortrap.

Hello,

Ok, that shouldn't be a problem then.
I really don't know what else to try, besides having someone else try to recover the family. It's worth a shot but there's no guarantee that it will actually work.

Hello,

You can ask a friend to test it in their game, if you put yoursavegame.sims3 and yoursavegame.sims3.backup on a usb stick or something like that, or rar it and send it through mediafire.
I'd be happy to try it out myself, though I'd have to tell you that I don't favor the odds much with my pc.

Hello,

Put copies of the folders yoursavegame.sims3 and yoursavegame.sims3.backup into a folder on your desktop or some other place. Richt clik to make it into a rar, you won't be able to upload a folder.
I think you can upload a file to mediafire without having an account.
