Doesn't detect hardware/ video. Can't change settings and my town is all white?

Hello, I've got a problem I can't find a solution to... I hope you can help!

I've tried installing sims 3 on my new machine. But when I run the game the first time, I get two error messages. The first: "Unable to identify hardware" and the second "unrecognized video card."
Ok I say, I'll just adjust my settings. But whenever i make a change in my settings, it won't change. This goes for my graphics settings, my sounds settings and my gameplay settings. When I open the settings, make a change and hit 'apply', when I open it again, it's as if nothing changed. The only thing I seem to be able to change is my resolution. Finally, when I do start the game, I have what seems like no textures when I am in the town view. It's mostly just a white screen.


I'm running windows 7, I have a gtx 580, I've reinstalled, ran in windows xp mode and as administrator and I've moved my settings out of my documents so it would be regenerated...
I must have seen like 20 topics with this problem and not one of them had a solution...

Please download and install this graphic card update: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/55133

Choose "Custom" and "Clean installation" during the installation wizard, if possible.
After it finished updating your driver, please restart your PC.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. I've also tried rolling the drivers back to see if that did anything. No dice... Still gives me the hardware not recognized message and won't let me change my settings
