Can you explain the simplest way possible what are magnet links, and what is the difference between a magnet link and a torrent?

Magnet links are basically alternate download links.

I assume you are familiar with torrent files. Basically, the torrent file contains the "metadata" which is information such as file list, filenames, tracker url, etc. Your BitTorrent client calculates a hash code which serves as a kind of ID in order to find peers (people who download/upload) that share the files.

The magnet link is just a set of parameters with the hash code which makes it possible for you to get the metadata directly from peers.

So, think of it as downloading the torrent file from peers.
