Installed base game but shows up with blank paper icon

I use Windows 8.
I never installed anything sims before.
I downloaded utorrent and then downloaded sims 3 base game from games4theworld.org, then downloaded generations because the must read list said I needed to download one expansion.
I completely finished both the downloads, but they show up in my downloads folders as blank white icon-ed .rar files.
I then downloaded the manual patch and opened it, but it says no previous version of sims 3 is downloaded.
What did I do wrong?

Download WinRAR, then unzip those files.
Then follow the instructions inside, except do not apply cracks.
Update using the Manual Patch, then download the Ultimate Fix and copy the files from the #Crack folder to the correct location.
