"The Sims 3 has stopped working" Error

I have just got a new Windows 8 laptop and downloaded the base game and several eps.

When I first installed everything I launched the game and it loaded to the start menu but the drop down box had no text in it, and the settings button had no text in the drop down menu so could not progress any further.

I decided to apply the ultimate fix, and now when I start the game from the launcher it goes to a black screen and after about 30 seconds i am directed back to my desktop where I get the error box: "The Sims 3 has stopped working".

I have tried bypassing the game launcher and the same thing happens.

I also have the latest patches.

How can I fix my issue?

Hello,

In which language did you install? If it's not in English, this might help.
If it is, or you'd rather not change the language, you can try reinstalling the base game. Note that there's no need to uninstall everything, just the base game will do. Don't forget to restart your system after uninstalling it, and don't forget to use the manual patch again after installing the base game.
