Need audio editor. Empty Need audio editor.

Post by Guest Sat 12 Jul 2014, 13:59

Hi there
I have problem. so because my lecturer at university give us lecture too fast, I decided to record his speech then play at home

but , There something happen. my clash air conditioner is somewhat broken. its constantly give buzz voice (like flying insect or fly's sound but louder than that)

at class, it not give us big problem,we could still hear the lecturer, the problem is just he is too fast. but at recorder, it cost so much problem.without that sound, the lecturer voice little bit resounding . so to learn it clearly, I have to made it louder (at least 120% in mkv media player) but that buzz voice going much louder than the lecture voice. so I just could stand to hear less than 5 minute and get my ear alot of pain Sad

you may not understand what I say. I could upload sample here, but I cannot cut the voice, I dont know how. its 2 hour ,with 116 MB size. I cannot upload..

If you understand, what is good audio editor that could remove or reduce surrounding voice?

Hello,

I don't know much about this, but I've had good experience with audio editing using the free Audacity tool: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/?lang=en

You can find more about filtering sounds out here: http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-109289.html
Looks like it's called "filter denoising". I've never done that myself though, but it's worth experimenting with.

Hello,

A few years ago, I did some (basic) audio editing with "Nero Wave editor", which is included in most "Nero"-bundles, which you can pirate. If you don't mind sharing the whole audio file - make an account at MEGA or MediaFire - I could maybe try my hands on it, with another good audio editor (iZotope RX 2 Advanced), and let you know the results next time I get to it (which can take a while though). But I can't guarantee anything.

Also, where exactly did you put the audio recorder, and what is your position in the lecture hall ? Maybe you could ask the professor to put the recorder just in front of his desk - that can make a difference too.

Audio problems aside, and you may not want to hear that, but I strongly suggest you slowly get used to fast-talking people and note-taking. You shouldn't make yourself too dependent on technology (e.g. what happens if your recorder runs out of battery during lectures ?). Sure it's difficult in the beginning, and I'm not saying you should ignore technology. That's not the point.

Technology should be there to ASSIST you, but the final responsibility lies with you. If you find you're having difficulties with note-taking and listening to someone, and you rely too much on technology, then you'e going to have trouble, later on. I had lectures that ran for 3 hours (with a 5 minute break), and I managed to take handwritten notes; again, it's difficult in the beginning, but getting used to that really pays off.

Not only will you get used to listening to fast-talking people and memorizing stuff, but you'll eventuall also learn to FILTER unnecessary information - so that you "only" write down what you really need.

From someone, who almost always took handwritten notes of lectures.

I put on the desk near him already. but the air conditioner surrounding sound really made my ear sick when hear it aloud

Yes I would do that. I would try to learn to hear fast people talking.but it does take time. its been 4 month I still not get used of that. I need backup. my note currently just cover small amount of lecture.yes I would like to adapt to them, as it something very hard to do..

Probably I won't even be listening to ALL the two hours (since I don't have that much time, lol); I'll just listen to parts of it, and try to apply some "denoising" or "decrackling" filter to the whole audio file. Again, I can't guarantee anything.

Just upload the file to MEGA or MediaFire an post the link here.

Sorry for the late reply, but I got caught up in some other stuff...that said, it's not exactly easy for me to "tell you how to do it", when I don't even know what the audio distortions sound like. Smile  But I'll try the following:

Look on Piratebay for the download iZotope RX2 Advanced, and install it (I'm not using Nero's Wave editor anymore, and haven't used it since 2006, lol). Open the program then and under "File", open your audio file.

Need audio editor. Screen10

This example from me is not too good...but if you loook closely, these small horizontal lines often indicate some sort of "background" noise, to put it easily. You can now mark a part of the audio file now (or even the whole file if you want), with the mouse, and then click on "Denoise" on the right-hand side.

Need audio editor. Screen11

Go to the "Advanced"-tab and use the same settings as I have used for my sample - make sure that the box called "link tonal and broadband controls" is UNMARKED, like in the picture. Then you push the slider under "Broadband"-reduction to the far right, like in the screenshot.

After that, click on "Learn". And then you can click on "Preview" to listen what it sounds like. If you want to change anything again, choose "learn" at first, and then again "preview"....

When you find that you like what you edited, click on "Process" at the bottom. It can take a little while, depending whehter you chose just a part of the audio file, or the whole thing.

Also, you may try to push the slider of "Tonal"-reduction to the far right, but LEAVE the "Broadband"-reduction at around 10 DB...but I would try the thing with "Broadband"-reduction FIRST, and then if you want, you can try the other option, if it's still not optimal.

"Broadband", here, means background noise like hum or buzzing. "Tonal", in contrast, means background noise like music, people talking, and stuff like that. So you may want to try both options.

I found that this program is a very good audio editor - if you know how to handle it. It's a complex program with many options - and learning how to use it can take a long time.

That said, I cannot "teach" anybody on how to use it, since I'm still learning myself how to use it (I'm not a professional audio editor, btw. It's nothing more than a hobby). Besides, I don't even have the time (and interest) in doing things like that on here.

My solution should work to cut out the most annoying background noise, if done correctly. But if you need more support on this, you should try consulting more specialized websites/forums - or try exchanging lecture notes with your fellow students...good luck !
