Trouble with Sims Medieval

Hi,
I am using a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6 and I have searched both the Mac and PC support forums with not much luck in solving my problem. My problem is as I a going through the tutorial and get to the part where I have to create a Monarch I am unable to do so. If I try to create my own Sim the games stays stuck on the loading screen and if I try and pick a pre-made one nothing happens no matter how many times I try to select a Sim nothing happens.
I have tried applying the PC The Sims: Medieval update / play fix (PC) and that doesn't help.

If anyone out there can help me that would be great! I am completely new to all of this and I am slowly learning as I go.
