Feel free to answer the poll if you like, about whether you would be interested in playing those old titles on the PC (again).

But who of you even remembers this ancient thing (or similarly old game consoles) here ?! Very Happy

I just "re-discovered" that Nintendo 64-console, which I had been using/playing with a lot, back in the days. But just a few years ago, I bought a few game cartridges/titles over the net, and for cheap. I wanted to re-live the nostalgia I guess. But I still haven't played some of these titles yet (like "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask").

If you look to the right-hand side of the picture, you will see a small module with a red cover - which is basically a RAM extension module that contains - and now brace yourselves - 4MB (in words: four megabytes) ! Very Happy  While that surely sounds ridiculous by today's standards, that was natural at the time the console came out. Such a module needed to be purchased separately, and it was necessary to have if you wanted to play some of the later N64 titles, shortly before the console was eventually phased out and replaced by the "Nintendo GameCube".

It feels a bit weird to play those old games, especially if you are used to modern-day consoles and/or PC games. But these old titles can still be entertaining ! And those of you who have followed Nintendo's product developments in recent years, will recall that a number of newly-released Nintendo titles are basically re-releases of old games, with polished and more up-to-date graphics.

Beyond that, I have a number of Super NES ROMs, which I occasionally play on the PC via an emulator ("Z-SNES"), but I tend to get too bored with those ancient games (for those of you who don't know, the "Super NES" was the predecessor of the Nintendo 64, and pretty common in the early to mid-1990s). For playing these games, I am using an XBOX (360) controller for PC, as I myself find it cumbersome to use the keyboard and/or mouse for these games. Although the emulator that I use can be configured with both XBOX controllers (for PC) and keyboard/mouse.

In the end, I guess the Super NES is too oldschool, even for me. Razz

Nintendo 64 was my first TV console, and my second console after Game Boy Pocket.

I still own the console, about twelve games, two gamepads and the memory expansion you showed. And everything still works. Razz Some games are amazing. I love the two Zelda ones or Super Mario 64. Sadly it looks horrendous in my Full HD TV.

Lately I only play N64 in my PC with Project64 and in my Android tablet with Mupen64. Two great emulators, though the first one works a bit better than the second. Even the graphics look considerably better than in the original console.

Hello @Enric !

Very nice. Very Happy  I still prefer the "original feeling" (on the console). Depending on how big the interest among the community is, we may be able to pull something off in this regard, about PC emulators of older consoles. The "Super NES" would be doable, and the "Nintendo 64" probably also.

But then, a lot will depend on how big the interest in such a potential project is, or becomes.

I keep the old console like a collection item, but when it comes to playing I prefer the emulator. I own a N64 USB gamepad and it gives a quite similar experience.

What is your potential project idea?

Basically, if we decide to release stuff in this direction, it's going to be something like a "Complete Collection", including one (or even more ?) emulator(s) alongside a bunch of ROMs.

The preparation for such a project would include stability testing and finding tweaks for any graver issues that may arise out of stability problems. That is more related to the actual emulator(s), but then, there is also the aspect of testing the actual ROM files.

I tested so far a few ROMs for the Super NES, and they seem to be working fine. I yet need to focus more on the Nintendo 64 stuff.

As I hinted on the Facebook-page of Games4theworld, to some extent this will be dependent on the actual interest in the community. If there is not much interest in these console emulators & ROMs, it would be a waste of time on our end to invest time and effort into that. In the meantime, I stickied this thread, for easier visibility, and I will also leave the poll open, until further notice. If we do decide on doing something in this direction, you should also keep in mind that it's most likely not going to happen too soon. Maybe sometime later this year, but then again, we'll have to see what the future holds.

Very Happy
