Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Empty Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

Post by Guest Fri 03 Apr 2015, 05:42

Hi,

I'm fairly new when it comes to upgrading operating systems, much less installing them on a laptop or PC, so please forgive me if I sound laughable at some points  IAmSoHappyEmergahwd

So my laptop is running Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit (a pirated copy that wasn't installed by me, but by my mom's friend), and I've been wanting to upgrade to Windows 8.1, and I saw that you guys had a torrent for it. Of course, Windows offers a free upgrade, but considering the OS I have is pirated, I doubt that'll work well.

I'm a little set on downloading the torrent, but I do have a few questions:

  1. If I install Windows 8.1 using the torrent you guys have uploaded, is it possible to install it without having to do a clean install? I don't really have an external hard drive where I could back up all my files... I've read that it's recommended to do a clean install, though, but I want to know if this is still possible, considering that it's only Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.
  2. Are there any precautions that I should take or anything important that I should do before installing?
  3. Also, will I have to re-install anything if ever not doing a clean install is possible?

I'm sorry if I sound like a noob (which I sort of am when it comes to these things  IAmSoHappyEmergahwd), but I hope you guys could help me or guide me with this?

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forum,

I've actually never used the option "upgrade" myself, hence I cannot tell you about any details, sorry. But generally, you should still BACK UP all your important data, for example onto an external hard-drive.

And yes, if you burn our Windows 8 release to a DVD, and boot from it, then you will get an option to "upgrade", but again, I haven't used that one myself.

If you want to give it a try: do you know how to boot from a disc ? Smile

While the computer is OFF, press either F12 or the DELETE key and hold it. What key you need to press depends on your computer/motherboard, so you might need to do additional research on your own. While you are holding down the key, turn the computer on, and continue holding the key. After a while, a "strange" menu will come up, usually with a blue background - this is the "BIOS" menu. You now need to look for something called "Boot sequence" or "Boot order", and you need to edit the settings so that the CD/DVD drive is in 1st place. Usually, you will need to select an option with the ENTER key, and then use the arrow buttons, to edit the options. But then, what exactly you need to do depends on your BIOS (not every BIOS is the same), but very often, you have key descriptions at the bottom of the BIOS that tell you what you need to press.

In the end, you need to save the changes, and re-boot. Now wait, and if you did everything correctly, the computer will boot from the CD/DVD drive and start the Windows installation.

Good luck for now !

Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Empty Re: Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

Hi Carlos,

Thanks for responding! I don't know how to boot from a disc, sadly, and I'm a little scared to do it because the last time I did something to my laptop concerning the start up, it sort of got messed up and I panicked a little, haha! But I will definitely consider it, though.

However, does that mean I have to re-install Windows 8 to get Windows 8.1? Since you only mentioned Windows 8... I was thinking of just using the Windows 8.1 torrent you guys have uploaded since I have Windows 8, unless you meant Windows 8.1?

Also, the method you mentioned above, does it require deleting every thing from the machine? Like wiping it out? Or will it just sort of overwrite (is that the right term?  IAmSoHappyEmergahwd) my existing Windows OS?

While I haven't done it myself, I assume yes: you will need Windows 8 already on your computer, if you want to upgrade to 8.1. Smile  But then, maybe someone else has a better idea. And no, what I described above only means that the computer will start from the CD/DVD drive, and not from your actual hard-drive. If you have already Windows 8 installed, I guess the upgrade will overwrite the existing stuff.

But then, if possible for you, I would still try and get hold of an external hard-drive, save all your (most) important stuff there, and then perform a "clean" install.

Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Empty Re: Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

I see, I see. All this stuff is still a little confusing for me, but I guess this is because I have no experience when it comes to installing an OS. I may need to perform more research before installing Windows 8.1, because I might end up breaking my laptop  Oh my... Maybe I should've listened to my dad and stuck with Windows 7 lol, Windows 8 sometimes lags on my laptop... (and is a little messy?)

Thanks again for the responses, Carlos!

Indeed, I myself am using Windows 7 most of the time, out of convenience. And you're welcome. Smile  Feel free to post back here about your progress, I will leave the thread open for now.
