Connect or stay offline, either way can't play

Hi guys, 

I have installed all of the packs via the torrents in the correct order as per the guide

I can see all of the expansion packs (my youngest is particularly keen to play the cats and dogs expansion)

However when I click on it, it asks whether I want to connect or stay offline. Now I understand it may not be possible to connect online, however clicking stay offline just goes back to the menu

Am I missing something glaringly obvious? How do I actually play the expansion pack. I have seen ZLorigin mentioned. Is this required?

Sorry for the typical noob question but can't see anything in FAQ and forum search for offline mode doesn't come up with anything clear for me.
