Portrait UI shrinks as household members increase--is there a workaround for this?

Noticed my sim portraits at the bottom of the screen got significantly smaller after my sim gave birth; apparently that's how the game compensates for needing more portraits onscreen in general. I get that that's a way of keeping the overall UI unobtrusive, but it kinda sacrifices functionality when you need to click things in the portrait menus imo. I'm already at my highest screen resolution, and I don't want to change UIConfig settings because I'm playing on a ~15 in/38 cm screen so everything is small enough as it is. Has anyone come up with a UI overhaul/other solutions? I feel like I can't be alone in this problem. ._.;;
