Fix for "Unknown Error Occurred"
I found this fix on the Sims 3 official forum. After uninstalling Pets and then installing Master Suite and Fast Lane, even the Launcher wouldnt open and all i got was "Unknown Error Occurred". Plenty of others had this issue on the EA site as well after uninstalling. So on a Mac:
1. Open Macintosh HD
2. Open the Users folder
3. Open your home folder (it'll be named whatever your username is)
4. Open the Library folder
5. Open Preferences
6. Once in that Preferences folder you will want to move "The Sims 3 Preferences" as well as any "com.transgaming" and "ipatcher" files you find to the trash.
7. Empty your trash
I did this and it WORKED! Also, someone else commented that you have to do this each time before playing then someone added that if you only delete the system.reg INSIDE the "Sims 3 Preferences" folder, that its all better.
I can confirm that deleting all that worked for me. I will post back to say if i need to do it each time or if i end up only deleting the system.reg folder.
Happy Simming

Re: Fix for "Unknown Error Occurred"
I only did it the once and everything has been fine since then. If you cant find them, try doing a search for them. If you dont have them, then you prob have a different problem...

Re: Fix for "Unknown Error Occurred"
They are system files i think that will re create each time you play. If your issue is a corrupt file, deleting these will fix it. Then next time you play, a new one will be created. Ive not had to do it since the first time.

Re: Fix for "Unknown Error Occurred"
I still can't manage to fix this error. I've tried a different navigation (since there is no library located in my user's home folder). /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences and here I cannot locate any folder that says "The Sims 3 Preferences". I've searched the whole mac basically and there is no such folder so now I am left still unsure of why my "Unknown Error" message occurs. I also attempted to delete all document files associated with the Sims 3 but still no solution. I've even tried to reinstall a different Sims 3 base game and still encounter the same error when attempting to use the fixes

Heya,
Do you have any mods or CC? If you do, try renaming your "/Documents/Electronic Arts/The sims 3" folder and launch the game. If it doesn't give you an error then you have buggy CC.
Is your game patched? Manually patch it to the latest version.
You can always try bypassing the launcher, to see if it's the launcher breaking your game or if it's inherent to the game itself: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,16483.0.html

You won't find the files there - they are in your individual Home folder, not the top level of the disk.
When you open the Finder, you need to go up to the 'Go' menu and hold down the Option key when you click on it. This will make your library visible in the list. Click on it from there.

Re: Fix for "Unknown Error Occurred"
@temporhalkeep:
Is your Library folder hidden? It is hidden by default (your files won't come up when doing a Finder search), so if you follow amster's instructions, you should be able to unlock it:
1. Open the Finder
2. On the top navigation bar, where it says File - Edit - View - Go, hit "Go" and press the option key. A new folder will show up between Home and Computer that says "Library". Click on it.
3. Go to Preferences, and scroll down to the folder "The Sims 3 Preferences." Delete "system.reg" (You can delete all of them, but usually it's system.reg that is the culprit)
