University is blocking the downloading of torrents. Is there a way around this?
Hello,
I live off-campus, but go to school and work on-campus. My university really doesn't block anything on our internet. Except, it seems, torrents. Now, I can go to torrent sites, like PirateBay and whatnot, and I can download the actual torrent file, but when I'm in my torrent client (uTorrent, in my case, though I've tested this on Tixati as well), I cannot download the file until I get home to my own personal internet. Is there a way I can get around this block my school seems to have put on downloading torrents? I've noticed sometimes that if I leave it long enough, it will start to download, but only at about 5-10 kbps. So not enough to put even a dent in downloading it. I know there's a proxy to get to the torrent sites, but as I said, that's not where the issue lies. Is there some sort of proxy to mask the actual downloading process?
Thanks!

Can use a VPN or do a proxy server within uTorrent I think should work.
I'm using a Proxy server (I forgot I even did it until I was looking at settings the other way.) Which just is just a Socks4 protocol, no idea how well it is in stopping my ISP from noticing what I'm downloading tho, hopefully enough I guess.
So just google how to use a proxy with utorrent and look at a few of them, see what way you want to go, HTTP, HTTPS(if it exist yet.) Socks4, or Socks5, Might have to try a few different ones while at your University, see what one works the best for you.
If you have anymore questions on this, feel free to ask.

Re: University is blocking the downloading of torrents. Is there a way around this?
Okay, this now allows me to download torrents, but with a catch. I have to start the download somewhere off-campus, using an internet connection that is not affiliated with the school's. Once I get on-campus, it will continue to download. But if I try to initiate the download on-campus, it won't work. While it's not the easy solution I was hoping for, it's still better than what I was working with, which was the school blocking the download no matter where I initiated it.
Thank you!

Use a VPN. Try SecurityKiss, it's pretty fast and you can choose from a few servers.

Ah, that is a good one! I've tried other VPN softwares, but I've found them confusing. This oen was as simple as clicking a button, and suddenly I seem to have transported myself across the country...
As I am now on Thanksgiving break, I'll have to wait until Monday to give this a go at the school.
Thank you!

http://www.technize.net/securitykiss-a-free-vpn-software-for-windows/[/mention] wrote:Please note that the free version only allows you a maximum bandwidth of 300MB/day and you can only browse the Internet through the free account. If you want to download stuff from torrents, you will need to go for a paid version which only costs around $5.
So, Yeah, it won't work with torrents unless you do the paid version.
Most VPN do that, free version lacks Torrent support, just because torrenting is a big data user, so lacking support saves them money.
