Origin Copy Sims 4 that was already updated. Empty Origin Copy Sims 4 that was already updated.

I bought a copy of Sims 4 and it was updated to the latest and I went to install one expansion and start the game but it gave the "you need to update" message

Go to the folder user\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4
open it and delete the file GameVersion.
Now start your game again.

If you're trying to install the pirated DLC, please note that you can't do that on a legit game.

ok I got it to work. can I still download stuff off the exchange? like houses and families?

You would have to start the Origin basegame of The Sims 4 in order to download from the Gallery. Note: if you applied pirated DLC "on top" of an Origin-game, then your game will ultimately be "cracked" as well - and then you would need to re-download from Origin.

Also, make sure you move your current install folder of The Sims 4, OUT from C:\Program files (x86)\Origin Games, if you have not done so yet. Move it for example under C:\Program files (x86). Otherwise there will probably be issues when you decide to re-download the Origin version. Though you can edit the default download location of games in Origin, I won't go into details now.
